GORDON SHOWS CLASS AT ROBIN HOOD

This year's Dick Squires Trophy was played at Robin Hood Golf Club on Monday 1st October 2018. The weather was particularly kind to us on the day with warm sunshine and very little wind to speak of. The course as always was presented in excellent condition, with firm fast running greens. The main prize for the Dick Squires Trophy was played as a gross stableford competition with players having no handicap shots to help them. The excellent winning score of 35 points was returned by Peter Gordon of Olton Golf Club. In second place was Barrie Webster from Moor Hall Golf Club with 33 points and third place was taken by Rodger Sutherland from Leamington & County Golf Club with 30 points. The nett competition was won by Anton Holliday, course director at Robin Hood, on a better back nine score from Paul Van Heyden of Stratford Oaks Golf Club, after both players had tied with 35 points.

I would like to thank Robin Hood Golf Club for looking after us all so royally, from the initial greeting in the Professional Shop, to General Manager Jon Northover who was very helpful in allowing us to make quite a late date change and to Warwickshire Golf Union President Graham Barton for his help in facilitating the whole day. My thanks also to Paul and his catering department for his attention during the event and to Anton Holliday and all members of the green staff for presenting everyone with the course to play in such very fine condition. A special word of thanks to George Kennedy for his company on the day and his help with checking the cards, and to my other playing partners Pat Capehorn and Mike Topliss, in the latter's case along with mine, very much a game of two nines !!

It was a very special thrill for the whole group to be joined for dinner by former County President and Warwickshire legend Dick Squires and for him to present his trophy that bears his name to the winner Peter. Dick is in his eighties now but was in very fine form with stories of yesteryear and expressed his delight on hearing of his adopted county of Yorkshire winning the Men's County Finals over the weekend.

Some 30 players competed and my thanks to them for their participation.

Congratulations and well played again to Peter for his well deserved win and to the other prize winners.

Senior County Colours were also presented by Warwickshire President Graham Barton to Willie Donnelly, Peter Holt, Peter Gordon and Rodger Sutherland.
