END OF SEASON SUCCESS V SHROPSHIRE AT SUTTON COLDFIELD

Morning Foursomes

This was our last league game and we needed a good win to have any chance of finishing Second, only three changes were made from the team that played Staffordshire. In came Seb Cave, Luke Donnelly (both from the The Belfry) and Alex Ford (Robin Hood).

We changed the Foursome pairing, from previous matches, to see if it would make any difference, so out first Captain Cameron Bridger and his partner Lewis Watson were soon four up and looking to finish early! However, that didn't happen and they managed to keep the excitement going to the the 18th eventually winning 1 up.

Out second, our Boys Matchplay Champion Rocco Luca (Coventry) and Boys Strokeplay Champion Jamie Johnson (Coventry) 4 up through 9 another early finish? ...Wrong!... a great come back from the S & H pair took the match to the 17th where we managed to close out the game.

The self-titled 'Dream Team' of Rhys Wallace (Handsworth) and Ethan Trouth (Moor Hall) found themselves 3 down after three holes and managed to get it back to all square on the 12th. Then, Ethan had a close encounter with a root, which I'm told caused a bad chip and resulted in an injury to his toe (I have since asked the green staff to remove the offending Root!). They managed to keep the match level but a blocked drive finished them off on the 18th to lose 1 down.

Jacob Parsons (The Warwickshire) & Alex Ford (Robin hood) out fourth didn't mess about and got the job done early and the final pairing came up against some very good golf from S & H going down early in the match and found it difficult to get back in the game.  However, we had won the Morning foursomes 3-2.

Afternoon Singles

Luke led the team out for the first time and quickly went 4 down whilst playing some very good golf, got himself back in the game with an amazing up and down for birdie on 7, followed by wins at the 8th and 9th got him back to 1 down. However, a run of birdies early in the back nine from S&H's Dani Hoof, saw him close out the game.

Cameron stood 4 up at one stage in the game but had to withstand a strong come back from Owen Reynolds to hold on for a half. Lewis Watson unusually 2 down at the turn had to battle hard to get his game back to level on the 17th, but couldn't complete the come back and halved the 18th and the match.

Rocco, another player with a great singles record, found himself behind all the way to the 17th which he managed to win and the match was all square. Rocco drove into the trees on the right of the 18th fairway and Daniel Haycocks hit the left side of the fairway it looked like he would lose the match. All Rocco could do was knock it out to 100 yards but Daniel Haycocks missed the green and Rocco hold his pitch for a birdie. Daniel just missed his pitch meaning Rocco won one up!

Jamie also went into an early lead but could not close out the game, one up going down 18 and with an arrow like drive he held on to also win 1 up. Then to Rhys, trying to control his driver on the front nine, found parts of the course Sutton members have not seen! Then, after finally accepting Chris Brown's (men's second team captain) advice and resting his driver in favour of the 3 Iron, went from 2 down on 12 to 2 up standing on the 17th tee. His tee shot into the 17th finished 15 feet away and as Jack couldn't make a birdie and Rhys won 2 & 1.

Jacob also went into an early lead and was always in control of his match winning comfortably 3 & 2, as did  Alex Ford who  played very solid golf making very few mistakes and wining 5 & 3, then came Ethan "The Root" Trouth who by now had taken a lot of stick for kicking the root and had cracked open the ibuprofen, thankfully, Ryan from S & H was finding the tight Sutton Course difficult and Ethan also won comfortably.

Last Seb Cave just back from Scotland playing in the Scottish Under 14's  had a tough battle he was 1 down playing 13 and couldn't  get himself level, Chris Watson went to give him some support he managed to win 14 and 16 to finally go one up, he hit the green on 17th and  just missed his birdie putt. His opponent Jamie Porter made a fantastic up and down to half the hole and take the match down 18, Seb split the fairway and hit the green in regulation and completed a great come back and a 1 up  win.

I watched some great golf from all of our players and the S & Boys, we proved too strong on the day winning the singles 8-2 and the match 11-4
