The Warwickshire County girls played their first league match against Northamptonshire at Northampton Golf Club on Sunday 24th May. The format for this match is 6 scratch matches, 3 handicap matches and 3 additional matches where the girls gain experience. The team, led by Girls’ County Captain, Ellie Berwick, put up a great fight but finally lost to Northamptonshire 7 - 5.
Ellie Berwick (handicap 9, Shirley) was first off against Ellie Darnell (handicap 5). Both girls played wonderful golf but Ellie from Northampton had the upper hand and won the first game for Northamptonshire. The next 2 scratch matches were also won by the home team. Maria Toledo Bailey (handicap 10, Walmley) managed to take her game to the 16th hole whilst Danielle Heath (Ladbrook Park, 12) lost on the 18th. Both games were nip and tuck all the way around.
Our first success came from Fran Palser (Olton, handicap 16) who won on the 17th. Victoria Dalton, (handicap 17, Stratford-upon-Avon) playing in her first league game for the County, put up a great fight eventually losing 3 & 1. Playing in the last of the scratch matches was Ellie Leech (handicap 18, Robin Hood) who managed to secure victory on the last hole. The final score in the scratch matches was a 4-2 win to Northamptonshire.
Following the scratch match were the 6 handicap matches. The first 3 counting for the handicap league and the second 3 for experience only. Our team was made up of Amelia Machin (Kenilworth), Alyssa Mildenstein (Ladbrook Park), Grace Wilkinson (Coventry Hearsall), Rebecca Bradbury (Hatchford Brook), Jessica McGhee (Rugby) and Jodie Wood (Shirley). Overall the handicap matches were drawn 3-3 but unfortunately the three wins were in the matches played for experience only! Congratulations go to Rebecca and Jessica who managed to secure their victories on the 18th and to Jodie who beat her opponent 5 & 4.
My thanks go to all the players who represented Warwickshire in a competitive but friendly manner. You were a credit to your County. I would also like to acknowledge the well organised arrangements at Northampton Golf Club. Thanks to Liz Mulliner and Sally McKeown and all those who assisted on the day.
Five of our Warwickshire team played for the County for the first time, namely, Victoria Dalton, Rebecca Bradbury, Grace Wilkinson, Jessica McGhee and Jodie Wood. Well done.
