WALMLEY GC

Monday 11th August saw the two semi finals take place of the Warwickshire Ladies Inter Club League.  The first of these saw a tee off time of 9.30 a.m. at Walmley Golf Club between Rugby Golf Club and Leamington & County Golf Club with the second at 10.00 a.m. at Nuneaton Golf Club between Shirley Golf Club and Walmley Golf Club.  After a weekend of hurricane type rain and winds, both Walmley and Nuneaton Golf Clubs prepared fantastic courses for these semi final matches.

Walmley commenced proceedings with Judith PEGLAR (Rugby) matched against Margaret SHEEPY (L & C) and the first win on the board was a win for Rugby 5 and 3.  The next match was truly a real battle going right to the 18th and then on to the 19th with a win once again for the Rugby player, Sue JONES who played against Liz MURDOCH.

Young Abi MORTIMER-LANE (RGC) was drawn next out against Martine GILKS (L & C) resulting in an impressive win for Abi 7 and 6.  Then hopes were raised for Leamington as the next match went to them when Liz MUNTON beat Sandra BRAZIER (RGC) 3 and 2.

These hopes were soon dashed when Rugby won the next 3 games!  Deb HARRAD (RGC) beat Dianne PHILLIPS (L & C) 3 and 2, followed by Caroline BROWN (RGC) being the victor against Felicity CARLESS (L & C) 4 and 3. The final match at Walmley saw Linda LONG (RGC) beating Kath HOWELL (L & C) 2 and 1, resulting in a win for Rugby Golf Club 6 games to 1.

League Organiser, Sue REDFERN thanked Walmley Golf Club for their hospitality and for preparing such a good course and wished Rugby well in the final.

At Nuneaton, Walmley won the toss and decided to Tee off first and on paper the teams looked to be fairly well matched.  Everyone was hoping that the forecast would prove wrong, as heavy showers were forecast at about 12 noon - but all matches were completed in the dry, however the wind was very strong, making play quite difficult at times.

Yen PHAM (SGC) was first off against Bev FIDDES (WGC) and they needed the full 18 holes to draw level and then commence down the 19th as a result had to be obtained.  Yen started the ball rolling for Shirley when she chipped in for a birdie on the 19th.  Carol O'HARE (SGC) played Anne WARDLE and once again Shirley were the victors, this time by 2 holes.

3rd off was Lesley FISHER (SGC) playing against Pauline GIBBON (WGC) and once again a win for Shirley when Lesley finished her game after the 15th, winning 5 and 3.  The next two games saw wins for Walmley when Linda CORNICK beat Val BARKER 4 and 3, closely followed by Karen TOWELL winning her match against Minu NATHWANI 3 and 2.

At this stage Shirley were just ahead 3 games to 2 and needing 1 more win for victory. This was achieved when Suzanne HUDSON came in with a win against Mave MENDUS 4 and 2, followed by a win by Carol BLACKBURN against Sandra EVANS 3 and 2.

Thus on this occasion Shirley were the victors and now are ready to meet Rugby GC in the final at the Menzies Welcombe Hotel Golf & Country Club on Monday 8th September.

County Captain, Karen HEARN in giving the results at the Nuneaton venue, thanked Nuneaton GC for the use of their course and their hospitality and commented that she was delighted that the games were played in such a friendly manner and in such great spirit. She wished the Shirley Team well in the final.
