 The BEAR

On an early December morning a group of 36 keen and enthusiastic golfers from around the county, representing 18 clubs, took to the course at Henley in Arden. The morning cloud gave way to blue sky and provided a dry and mild day which enabled some fantastic golf to be played.

The format was Greensomes stableford, which produced some interesting scores ranging from 23 – 40 points for each pair. Across the competition there were 3 birdies and 52 pars on the course – a great achievement. Teams  apparently found the par 3’s easier overall with the elevated tee on the par 3, 12th being the easiest hole on the day. The 13th hole, an uphill par 4, with a raised green proved to be the most difficult.  Some found the differences in the scoring were the speed of the greens and the length of the course.

Congratulations go to the eventual winners, who were Barbara Kelsey and Jayne Proud from Wishaw, scoring 40 points including a fabulous 4 points on the 280 yard par 4, 9th hole.

Runners up were Rita Lawson and Linda Gumery from Shirley who were just one point behind the winners with 39 points.

A special thanks to all participants who helped raise funds to support Warwickshire Junior Girls Training with the ball sweep raising £85 and an additional £40 was raised through a guess the Bear’s Birthday raffle – yes he really is that big! (pictured above) - you will have many opportunities over the next few months to make your guess!!!

Finally, County Captain, Karen Hearn thanked Henley Golf and Country Club, their Lady Captain Jane Parkin and her army of volunteers who supported the day – this is very much appreciated.

The next winter alliance takes place at Whitefields Golf Club on Saturday 11 January – check with your Captain if a team from your club has been entered.

We wish all a very happy Christmas and successful golfing new year
