The Girls Championship was always going to be a battle between Maisie Halstead and Serafima Taylor with both girls having achieved great success this year. Maisie is our current Ladies County Champion and also heads to Dubai in November having secured a place in the Faldo Series Final and Serafima has recently won the English U16 title.
Arianna was the only one of our top three girls missing this year and understandably so, as she was representing England for the first time, in the u16 team which played Scotland at Pannal GC this week. Not only did the team win 5-1 but Arianna won both her matches! Congratulations Arianna!
The Girls Championship was played on Wednesday 20th August and the girls were looking forward to playing one of our top Warwickshire courses. 8 girls entered the 36 hole Championship and 5 the 18 hole Championship. Entry is restricted to a maximum handicap of 36.4. There are 7 trophies to compete for and the competition was extremely competitive!
Copt Heath were hugely supportive throughout and I was very grateful to Matt Nixon, Club Manager and Jane Hobbs, Lady Captain and her wonderful team of ladies many of whom were there all day. We also had great support from the Pro Shop, the Bar and the Caterers for which we were very thankful.
The day was dry but chilly to start but the sun shone at the end. My thanks to Deb Reynolds and Tim Knight who did a sterling jobs as referees. We were delighted to see Sue Timberlake, WLCGA President and Sharon Butler, WLCGA Chair who were there for the prize giving.
Alison Nicholas started the girls off all day and my thanks go to her along with Elizabeth Earnshaw who ensures everything is done correctly particularly regarding results!
The County Championship is awarded to the girl with the best gross score over 2 rounds and as expected Maisie and Serafima were only 2 shots apart after round 1. However there was a third girl waiting in the wings, Jessica Davies was only one further shot behind! In the afternoon round Serafima stretched her lead and with a 152 total became our Girls Champion, winning the Edgbaston Trophy. Maisie hung on to take the Stratford Trophy as Gross Runner Up.
The 36 hole Estelle Goodman Nett trophy was won by a delighted newcomer to us, Ava Hoey who plays at Copt Heath with 2 rounds of 70 and 66 nett finishing 4 shots ahead of her nearest opponent. These were great scores from someone who had not been playing golf that long and we hope to see lots more of her!
The under 18 Pam Large Best Gross Trophy for those not having played 36 holes was won by an extremely happy Lauren Clarke with what I believe was her best gross score to date – I did manage to witness a perfect birdie on the 18th! Lauren also won the Jane Dennick under 14 Gross Trophy.
Serafima also won the under 16 Sylvia Evans Gross Trophy.
The winner of the best nett under 18 Harborne Cup was Isla Pallett from Copt Heath who also won best nett under 16 and under 14!
We ran a Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive competition both of which were won by Lily Knee, our brilliant Girls Captain! A fitting end as this will be Lily’s final Championship as she heads to university soon. Maisie also retires as a ‘junior’ and we will miss them both as they have been such a support with their happy and encouraging personalities!
Serafima will represent Warwickshire at the England Golf Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa in September and we wish her well in that. She joins Maisie who is there as Ladies Champion and Anne Parry as Senior Ladies Champion.
Those with the best 36 hole gross scores are entered into their age categories at the Midland Champion of Champions and we are delighted to send Maisie as u18, Serafima u16 and Anaya Sukhija as u14 representatives. Anaya has not been playing that long and it will be quite an experience for her!
In addition Serafima has been put through to the Justin Rose/Telegraph competition in the gross category and Isla Pallett in the nett category. You can follow their progress on the leaderboard on the Justin Rose/Telegraph website.
There were also many good nett scores handed in and aside from the golf, there is wonderful camaraderie between the girls of which Alison and I are very proud.
