Availability of senior squad members was once again an issue this year, and with half of the team still eligible for u16 selection, Team Warwickshire took an inexperienced group of players to the prestigious Boys’ County Championship at Leicestershire’s KIRBY MUXLOE GOLF CLUB. What the group lacked in experience, they would make up for in tenacity; putting up a spirited performance for their county.
Windy conditions prevailed, and scoring was difficult. Joshua led the Warwickshire lads in round one with an excellent 74 (+3). Both Callum (77) and Sam (79) managed to break 80, with all 3 of our other lads finding things more tricky and carding 81 (+10). With 5 scores out of 6 to count, Team Warwickshire lay down the pack in 7th place after round 1.
In the afternoon session, Joshua once again proved to be Warwickshire’s leading light, shooting an improved 73 (+2) with some consistently good golf. Of equal note was Spencer’s excellent 73 (+2) representing an 8 shot improvement from his morning round. Callum (76) and Alfie (78) also improved their scores, with Louis also managing to shave off one shot to card 80. Sam finished with an 81, leaving him and some of the other players equally frustrated and ruing missed opportunities.
Team Warwickshire’s second round efforts hauled them up one place to a creditable 6th overall, having battled well against more experienced opposition. The boys should be proud of themselves, and we should remember that all but one of these players will continue to be available at u18 level next year, and some for several years to come. Their experience here will mean they come back better and stronger next time.
The team title was taken this year by an excellent Worcestershire team, to whom we give our congratulations. Thanks as always to our squad of parents, and Team Warwickshire officials who provided much needed assistance and moral support on the day.
