Warwickshire Senior Championships 2023 – Thursday 6th July – Handsworth Golf Club
Championship day saw a field of 26 players compete in this years Warwickshire Senior Amateur Championships. Handsworth Golf Club was the host venue and the course was in fantastic condition.
Some heavy rain passed just before play commenced and a breezy afternoon would face the players.
With the Top 8 players entering the Senior Matchplay Championship, the score for this mark would be 77. Roger Neale (The Welcombe) would shoot this number but would miss out to finish 9th on countback. Philip Murphy (Handsworth) would take the 8th place in the matchplay with his 77. One better with a 76 were Shaun Young (Maxstoke Park), Kevin Henderson (Maxstoke Park) and Nev Gardner (Stoneleigh Deer Park) all safely through in tied 5th spot. With Overall prizes for the first three places, Roger Parfitt (Coventry) would miss third place on countback with his 75. Peter Gordon (Olton) would take third spot by virtue of a better back 9. Runner up for this year would be Warren Bladon (Kenilworth) with a 71. The champion for the year would be Stephen Creed (Stratford on Avon) who managed the conditions tremendously and his one birdie and just a single bogey in his level par 70 was fantastic golf. Winning the George Stubbings Salver for the championship and the Directors Cup for winning age 55-59.
Stephen now represents Warwickshire in the English Senior Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa on 16th & 17th September. We all wish him the best of luck in bringing the title back to Warwickshire.
Best net score of the day would go to James Lamond (Kenilworth) winning the Bill Dudley Evans Salver.
The Jim Dean Cup (Aged 60 – 64) would go to Peter Gordon (Olton).
The Carl Bretherton Salver (Aged 65-69) would go to Steve Reynolds (Maxstoke Park).
