2023 Ladies County Championship

Katie Drew (Copt Heath) won the Warwickshire Ladies County Championship held at Stratford-on-Avon Golf Club.

Day One

A sunny day heralded the Ladies County Championship 2023 on Monday 15th May. Stratford-on-Avon Golf Course looked stunning. The Greens staff should be complimented on the presentation of the course. Four competitions were being played on this first day: the County Championship qualifying 36 holes, Senior Championship played over 18 holes, the Silver Division Medal and the qualifying round for the new English Women’s Champion Club competition.

31 players were entered for 36 holes stroke play with the leading gross scores going through to the match play knockout.

The Silver Division Medal competition over 18 holes was played by all 58 entrants, the winner being the player with the best net score.

40 ladies who were 50 and over on 15th May played for the Senior Championship, the best gross score over 18 holes.

5 teams of three players nominated by their home clubs were entered the English Women’s Champion Club Qualifier: Copt Heath, Edgbaston, Harborne, Kenilworth and Stratford-on-Avon. The winning team has the lowest aggregate gross score of the three team members and they qualify to play in the national final of the English Women’s Champion Club competition.

Day Two

14 players took part in the match play knockout – resulting in the leading stroke play qualifiers, Hannah Coles and Liz Haycock receiving byes into the quarter-finals.

Katie Drew, Maisie Halstead, Lauren Besford, Lilly Phelps, Arianna Rusted and Rachel Rusted were successful in reaching the quarter-finals after the mornings play.

In the afternoon, Katie Drew defeated Hannah Coles by 1 hole, Maisie Halstead defeated Lauren Besford 4 and 3, Liz Haycock defeated Lilly Phelps by 2 holes and Arianna Virik defeated Rachel Rusted by 4 and 2.

Day 3

The semi-finals were closely contested with Katie Drew defeating Maisie Halstead by 1 hole and Liz Haycock winning her match against Arianna Virik at the 19th hole.

WLCGA is very grateful to Stratford-on-Avon Golf Club for the support and assistance that was provided by the members and staff in running the championship and the other competitions played in conjunction with the first of the qualifying rounds.
