Seniors Back to Winning Ways at Leek GC

Warwickshire Seniors second league match of 2023 was away against Staffordshire Leek Golf Club.

The team selected to play for Warwickshire was:

Warren Bladon & Simon Timmins

Karl Smith & Tim Cooley

Dylan Ward & Andy Shread

Roger Neale & Ken Spencer

Andrew Carman & Peter Gordon

Shaun Young & Kevin Henderson

The team all arrived safely at Leek Golf Club after a drive to the northern tip of Staffordshire. The weather was overcast, a bit drizzly and standing on the top of the hill (by the clubhouse) in the northerly wind, we were all feeling a bit cold!

We got off to a good start in the morning foursomes with both Karl & Tim and Andrew & Peter recording heathy wins.  Warwickshire going into lunch with a 4.5 to 1.5. lead.

After lunch the fourball games got underway, in the top match, new pairing Warren & Simon played good golf and recorded a 3/2 win. The next 3 games were extremely close and all headed up the 18th hole, Karl & Tim winning 1 up, both matches 3 & 4 losing 1down. With game 6 also going Staffs way, match score was 8.5 – 7.5 to Warwickshire.

The stage was set for a thrilling climax with Peter & Andrew playing the 18th hole. We all watched from the clubhouse windows…Warwickshire made a solid par, Staffs’ captain Andy Guy then had a putt for a birdie to win their game and the match: as the putt slid passed the hole, the game was halved and the match was won for Warwickshire 9.5-8.5.

Thanks to Leek Golf Club for hosting us, the course was in good conditions, playing and looking down the holes from high elevations was interesting, climbing up the hills not so much fun!

To Staffordshire and Andy Guy thank you for a fantastic match, it was played in a competitive, friendly spirit and I wish you all the best for rest of the season.
