The first match for the Warwickshire U16 team in 2023 was a friendly against Leicestershire at Atherstone Golf Club. The morning foursomes started with a strong pairing for Warwickshire in the first match with Josh Gardner and Callum lee, however things didn't start as planned with the pairing being two Down through the first 3 holes.  Heading into the back nine they would be back on track at one up and starting the 17th the Warwickshire pairing were dormie 2up. They would lose 17 but would go on to win their match 1 up.

Next up was Freddie Montgomery and Joey Williams who started brightly being 1 up through 4 holes however they would be one down through seven. An unbelievable birdie on eight out off the deep rough by Freddie would get the pairing back to all square. The 13th would cost the pairing dearly with a three putt, putting them 2 down a deficit they could never recover, battling to lose by one down.

Arman Basra and Alfie Smith would never really get going with some early holes being lost to pars and bogeys with a few loose shots, they would go on to lose 1 down.

Jack Hewitson and Sam Storer would go one down on the 4th only for Sam Storer to chip in brilliantly on the 6th for a birdie to return the match to all square.  The Leicester and Rutland pairing played some solid golf and were holing putts from everywhere enjoying the fast greens to win the match 5&3.

Last up in the foursomes were Jake Frearson and Ollie Jones. They came up against a very good Leicester & Rutland pairing who stormed to a 5 up lead with 6 to play but Jake and Ollie battled hard and never gave up and got an unbelievable half point for the team.  Heading into Lunch, we were unfortunately 1.5 to 3.5 behind.

In the singles matches we went out in handicap order with Josh Gardner leading the way who was not feeling very well.  Josh would take an early two up lead through 3 and as usual he would not relinquish this grip on the match and would be 6 up with 6 to play and eventually winning 5&3.

Freddie Montgomery was again 2 up through 3 holes, however Freddy would enter the back nine all square and would lose the 12th and 15th to go 2 down and eventually losing his match 2&1.

Callum Lee would start his match well, being 1 up through 3 holes. This was a very hard fought game with both players making a lot off pars. Callum would birdie 8 to go 2 up and never really looked in trouble after this and would close out the win 4&2.

Joey Williams had a tough match, with the lead in the match swinging back and forth. Joey finished strongly to win 1 up. Arman Basra never really got into this match being 4 down through 4 however he did get his match back to just two down, before eventually losing out 4&3.

Alfie Smith was forced to concede his match when 6 down with 8 to play.  Jack Hewitson was next and never really got it going despite every effort to dig deep, the Leicestershire player playing steady golf and holing putts Jack would lose out 3&2.

Jake Frearson again battled really well in his match unfortunately just coming up short losing 3&2. Sam Storer again battled all the way taking it down the last to eventually lose 2 down. Ollie Jones in the final match was in good form playing steady from start to finish recording an impressive 8&7 win.
