Men's 1sts Warm Up at Cold Ashby

The Bears 2nd friendly of the season took place at what could only be described as an asthmatics nightmare (Cold Ashby Golf Club) Driving down the mile long drive way to get to the club house it became apparent that it was going to be more than just a game of golf. Endurance test.

The team for this fixture was:

Rob Bardsley – (Moor Hall)

Harrison Long – (Moor Hall)

Matt Cryer – (Coventry)

Darryl Gwilliam – (Coventry)

Cam Bridger – (Maxstoke Park)

Warren Bladon – (Kenilworth)

Ian Smith – (The Warwickshire)

Lee Podmore – (Harborne)

Will Bailey – (Moor Hall)

Mike Pell – (Olton)

Leading the way were Rob and Harrison, a formidable Moor Hall pairing. Doing exactly what was expected of them securing the Bears first point of the morning with a 2&1 win. Next out to the journey up the mountain was a familiar name (Matt Cryer) partnering newbie Darryl Gwilliam. It became apparent that although this was Darryls first outing, he was very comfortable. Almost pitching his drive on the 1st green. They found themselves a couple up early on and this form carried on all the way to the 16th where they finished the game off with an impressive 3&2 win. Following this impressive duo was Cam Bridger and myself. A/S for most of the front 9 but a run of good holes put us 3 up mid-way through the back 9. Some equally good golf from the oppo found us 1 up going down the last. Par down the last was enough seal our 3rd point of the morning. Our 4th pairing consisted of Warren Bladon and Ian Smith, they found themselves 1 down at the turn and a run of good golf from their oppo soon sealed their fait with a 3&2 loss. The final pairing for the Bears, Lee Podmore and Will Bailey. Both of whom woke up Sunday morning expecting a nice easy drive to play Ladbrook for the 2nds. Instead they faced a 45 minute drive then a day of endurance tests. Taking their match all the to the 18th they secured a half for team Warwickshire. 3.5 points from the mornings round.

Up against Northamptonshire’s number 1 was Rob Bardsley who found himself a couple down but some very impressive golf from Rob (5 birdies) on the back 9 was good enough to see off his opponent. Harrison Long out 2nd, All square through 6, but eventually lost 3&2. The big hitting Darryl Gwilliam up next who was licking his lips at the amount 340 yard par 4s he was about to take on, that he did. An impressive 5&4 win for Darryl. Cam Bridger, another promising 2nd team player out number 4, just another day at the office for Cam securing our 3rd point of the afternoon. Following Cam was Matt Cryer who in typical fashion cruised into an early lead and never let off. 5&4 win for Matt, lovely work. Ian Smith and Will Bailey both battled round all 18 to secure 2 more halves while Lee Podmore Narrowly missed out and lost 2&1.

A Promising start to our 2023 season.
