Warwickshire Girls Stableford Round 1

Warwickshire Girls start the Stableford Series with record numbers!

On a fine day with superb conditions at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club, considering so many Warwickshire courses are still struggling after a wet March and April, the Warwickshire Girls turned out in force for this, the first of three Stableford events in the Series with points to be earned in the Spring Series of the Junior Order of Merit. Many of the girls looked very smart in their county ‘navy and yellow’ kit.

Sutton Coldfield were as ever, a wonderful support, with ladies helping chaperone groups of girls on the course and in the club house and ball spotting. As last year Brock Harrison acted as Starter and sent the girls off with gusto! Our very grateful thanks particularly go to Sue Foster (Lady Secretary) Jean Williams (Lady Captain) and Ruth Watson (Vice Captain) who have helped, planned and organised with me over the last few weeks. Patrick the Head Professional kindly allowed use of the simulator in the shop and gave the girls the opportunity to ‘play’ the 7th hole at Pebble Beach, donating a prize to the winner. The winner for the 2nd year running was Sophie Goonewardane-Brown with a shot only 9 feet from the pin. I expect her to be going for the ‘hat-trick’ next year!

The highlight of the day was made by the presence of Sylvia Evans and her husband John. A few years ago Sylvia donated 2 beautiful salvers to be awarded to the winner of the 9 hole and 18 hole competition but it has been many years since she was able to present them herself. She saw all the girls drive off the 1st tee and then returned later to present the 18 hole trophy to the winner.

Those who have known Sylvia for many years were thrilled she felt able to join us as she has, in the past given so much of her time and energy to the Warwickshire Girls.

The girls all had their photographs taken with Sylvia on the 1st tee. Our thanks go to Ruth for these wonderful pictures taken at the prize presentation.

Six girls played in their first Stableford and received their ‘Warwickshire Bear’ brooch. They were Lola Beer, Georgina Porter-Worrall, Ruby Litwinko- Smith, Emilia Sadler, Amelie Stead and Sophie Williams.

Thirteen girls took part in the 18 hole competition which was won by a very delighted Grace Walkden (Stonebridge Golf Centre) with a wonderful score of 38 points.
