Midland Veteran LGA Team Championships

The Midland Veteran Ladies Golf Association (MVLGA) Team Championships, of which many of our WLCGA over 50s are members, was held this year at Handsworth GC.

The course with its 3 new holes, was in great condition although playing much longer and tougher than expected. The weather was lovely for October, chilly for any early starters but we all enjoyed ourselves both on the course and at the dinner on one of the nights. After the dinner, we were treated to a Neil Diamond tribute act, with most songs, needless to say, very familiar and it didn’t take much for the Midland Vets to get up on the dance floor!

Teams of 4 are entered from most Midland counties and indeed many enter 2 teams. The competition is held over 3 days, day 1 being a Greensomes event and days 2 and 3 individual Medals with the best 3 scores from each team counting towards the results.

The main prizes are for the team events, both gross and nett over the 36 hole Medal rounds and this year, were spread around 6 different counties. Nottinghamshire took the gross prize, with Staffordshire 2nd and Worcestershire 3rd. But in the nett prizes, Leicestershire were 1st, Shropshire 2nd and Warwickshire 3rd!

The Warwickshire 1 team was made up of Claire Howells (Moor Hall), Carol O'Hare (Shirley), Anne Parry (Stratford on Avon) and Gillian Curley (Stratford on Avon)

In addition, Gillian won both the 36 hole individual nett prize and the 36 hole gross prize for the over 65s! This was a brilliant individual performance with nett rounds of 71 and 73.

The Warwickshire 2 team was Judith Pegler (Rugby), Pat Hale (Edgbaston) Sue Timberlake (Edgbaston) and Sue Westall (Copt Heath)

We run a 'side' competition amongst ourselves and Gillian was clear 36 hole winner but aside from her, the best nett scores on both day 1 and 2 were by Sue Westall.

I want to thank both teams for making themselves available for this event, all at their own expense and for playing with such enthusiasm for our county. Whilst there, we play in Warwickshire colours and always try to represent Warwickshire in the best possible way.
