The 2021 Champion of Champions event held yesterday at The Forest of Arden which sees the Club Champion from each of the Warwickshire Clubs participate against each other, saw twenty four hardy souls brave a cold November day which began in a persistent drizzle of rain but finish in autumn sunshine. The event played over 18 holes on the challenging 6707 yard Arden lay out saw Ladbrook Park's Philip Hoye emerge as the winner.
The winning score of a 1 under par round of 71 was sufficient to give Philip victory by one shot over playing partner Ryan Hinsley from Olton Golf Club, with Ryan Gavin from Coventry beating Jack Drury from Stratford-on-Avon for third place, by virtue of a better back nine score, after the pair had tied with one over par rounds of 73.
It was a visit back to familiar territory for Philip who was Head Professional at the Marriott Hotel venue back in 2013, followed by subsequent moves to The Belfry and then Stonebridge Golf Club before returning back to the amateur ranks. His solid round yesterday despite three-putting both the 7th and 9th holes saw him to the turn in a level par 36 shots. However three birdies in a row from the 11th hole gave the former Professional a three shot lead over Ryan after thirteen holes. Despite a bogey on the 14th hole from Philip and a birdie four on the par five 17th hole from Ryan, Philip parred the last to win.
Congratulations to Philip on his win.
All the players were very complimentary about the state of the course which provided them with a robust challenge despite a lot of rain recently, the greens in particular were in excellent condition.
My thanks to Fraser Liston Director of Golf at The Forest of Arden for his help in facilitating this event.
Thanks also to Chris Brown for his timely arrival to help me with the scorecards and to Chris Laird for his speedy entering of said scorecards to the Intelligent Golf system.
