Under 18 Boys v Derbyshire

The Under 18 Boys final match of the season was away versus Derbyshire. The hosts were Burton Golf Club and the match was reduced to singles only due to a clash at the Club.

The boys arrived ready to play knowing that a win would secure the league.

Alex and Chan led the way in the first two matches and both boys played some excellent golf and took early commanding leads. Alex eventually winning 5&4 and Chan went one better, 6&5.

Ollie played number three and knew it was going to be tough when his opponent birdied 2 of the first 3 holes. Charlie played number 4 against the Derbyshire Captain so was also in a tough match.

Ollie could not recover from the early deficit and lost 3&2. Charlie was down late in his match but finished in style with a couple of birdies to win and secure the 3rd point.

Niall was next followed by Liam. Niall ran into some fine golf from his opponent but Liam was in good form and took an early lead which he never relinquished and won 4&2. Niall battled hard but eventually lost 4&3

Sam Knowles played at number 7 and also encountered some good golf, although he never gave up Sam couldn’t hold on and lost 3&2.

That’s left 3 matches. Lennon took control early in his match and ran out a convincing 5&4 winner. Tom Poole took an early lead but was pegged back and went to the 18th 1Up. Although the pressure was on, Tom made a superb birdie on the last to win 2 Up.

Last man was Ben Storer making his debut for the Under 18 boys having been drafted in late in the week. Ben was obviously nervous and lost the first but then he found his feet and proceeded to make 5 birdies to win his match 3&1. A special mention for his opponent, Adam who was also making his debut and played some great golf himself.

A fine performance from all the boys meant another victory by 9.5 to 5.5 and the league title.

My thanks go to Richard Clark, Graham and Mark for their support yet again and also to Richard Storer for making Ben available and then nervously following Ben on the back 9. I’m not sure who was happier at the end!
