The 3rd match of the season at Stonebridge Golf Club saw the U18 take on a strong side from S&H.
Alex Ford and Sam Easterbrook lead the team out in a difficult match against the best pairing from S&H. They were followed by Seb and Charlie who formed a new pairing for us.
The first match was keenly contested with nothing between the teams however the S&H pairing came through to win 1up. The second game was more one sided as Seb and Charlie won comfortably 4&3.
Chan and Ollie played at number three and went behind early. It was a deficit they could not recover from and lost 4&2. Lucas and Niall however played well together and controlled their match to win 4&2 making the overall match score 2-2 with one match left on the course.
Tom and Lennon did not start well and went behind early and were 3 down at the turn. Despite a spirited fightback on the back nine they could not overturn this lead and lost 1 down.
So, at the half way stage we were behind 3-2. This was the first time the boys had been behind after the foursomes in a while, so they knew we were in for a tough match.
Alex, Seb, Sam and Charlie led the way in the singles knowing that a good start would be crucial to the outcome of this match.
Alex was in a tight game but Seb and Sam both took an early lead, Charlie was also in a tight game which swung one way and then the other.
Seb and Sam took control and both won their games with holes to spare.
Alex was ahead and eventually won 2&1. Charlie was 1 down with 2 to play and was under pressure. However, he produced a great finish to win his match 1up and give the boys the first four points of the afternoon. A great start!
Chan was next and in a determined mood having lost in the morning. He took control and won 4&3, 5 from 5!
Ollie battled hard but could not keep the run going losing 4&3 but Niall was playing well in the next match which was close. Lucas was number 8 and was also involved in a tense, tight affair.
Both Lucas and Niall are now seasoned match players and they showed the progression we have made as a team when matches are close. Both matches went to the 18th and both boys closed out for a 1 up win securing an overall win for the team with two matches still left to finish.
Both Tom and Lennon went behind on the front 9 and neither could recover both losing with holes to spare.
Overall a 9-6 victory from a losing position at half time was a great result.
The boys well well supported again by Graham, Mark, John and a number of the parents. A special mention for my wife Beth for collecting lunch as due to covid-19 related staffing problems the golf club could not cater for us and to Alex Cave for putting it all out for the boys.
