GARDNER & CLEMENTS REIGN AT NORTH WARWICKSHIRE
The Warwickshire Boys Under 14 and Under 12 Championships took place at North Warwickshire Golf Club on 17th August.
The Under 14 Championship has been played at North Warwickshire since 1979 with Paul Broadhurst being the first Champion on the board where he retained his title the following year. The Under 12's Championship was added later in 2010. The welcome we all receive at the Club is always fantastic and the course always presented in top condition. This year was no different.
First into the Clubhouse was 9 year old Byron Clements from Hatchford Brook shooting a very respectful 85. But what I have just as much respect for is that he carried his own Clubs around the 18 holes which I think is fantastic to see! This score secured the U12 Championship lead, but meant a nail biting hour or two waiting for the remaining Under 12 players to return their scores.
As it happened Byron kept the Clubhouse lead for sometime and as the last cards got entered it was good enough to finish joint 5th overall, but also to clinch the Under 12's title by only one shot over Oliver Camalo-Jones from Coventry Hearsall.
The favourites for the Under 14 trophy were last to return their cards with the winning score coming in from Joshua Gardner (Coventry Golf Club) on a gross 80. Josh sorted out his round extremely well with 3 birdies, 3 pars and 3 bogies over the opening nine holes to head into the back nine level par. In his own words he struggled a little with his putting over the final 9 holes but his score was still good enough to take the title by 3 shots from Miles Pegg (Stonebridge) and Alfie Mitchel both on 83 and then Callum Lee (Maxstoke Park) a further shot back.
A huge congratulations to Josh and Byron on winning your County titles! Josh goes on to play in the Midland Junior Champion of Champions event (which U18 and U16 Champions also qualify for) which is being played at Peterborough Milton Golf Club on 19th Sept.
