Seniors grab win at Mickleover

Warwickshire fielded a very strong team knowing that only an away win could keep us in the race to win the league. It was also an opportunity to try out some possible pairings for the forthcoming County Finals in October. The Derbyshire strategy of choosing Mickleover as a venue due to its trickiness and, also anticipating that none of The Warwickshire Team had experience of the course, paid immediate dividends with our very strong first four pairings in the morning foursomes not recording a win. Mason and Cooley halved their match and Warwickshire were able to salvage something from the morning foursomes with Match 5, Sheard and Henderson winning 3&1 and in Match 6, Soen and Young winning 3&2.
Morning Foursomes Result:
Warwickshire Won 2 matches, halved 1 and Lost 3.
Warwickshire 2.5 points – Derbyshire 3.5 points.
With the same pairings order for the afternoon Fourballs, Warwickshire had to capitalize on the experience of the course gained in the morning foursomes. Duly, Bladon and Allen rose to the challenge and delivered a 3&2 afternoon victory. Derbyshire’s strong pairings in matches 2 and 3 allowed them to regain the advantage in the match overall. But, it certainly wasn’t over…. Warwickshire recorded impressive wins in matches 4, 5 and 6 to seal a very satisfying win.
Afternoon Fourball Result:
Warwickshire Won 4 matches, halved 0 and Lost 2.
Warwickshire 8 points – Derbyshire 4 points.
The overall result therefore was a Warwickshire win 10.5 points to 7.5 points.
Our thanks to Mickleover Golf Club for hosting us and providing outstanding food through out the day. Playing for Warwickshire you can be assured of incredible support. The Team is as always appreciative of the support given by Mark and Deb Reynolds, their presence around the course during the day is invaluable. In addition, our thanks goes out again to Pete Clarke who has become ever present at our senior fixtures.
Having narrowly lost to Worcestershire in our last league fixture, full credit to the Team in grinding out a result on a course that was deliberately chosen to maximise home advantage, which of course is Derbyshire’s prerogative. We now eagerly await the result of the Worcestershire vs Staffordshire match on 19th August which will determine the league winner. If Staffordshire win, Warwickshire will pip Worcestershire to the title, any other result would end in us being runners up.
We have one non league match remaining on the 2nd September 2021 against Nottinghamshire at Norwood Park Golf Club. This is followed on the 5th/6th/7th October 2021 with The County Finals at St Helens Golf Club.
