Seniors have a close encounter!

Venue: Harborne GC           Date : 7th July 2021

Warwickshire Team:

David Mason and Ken Spencer                         Tim Cooley and Roger Neale

Tony Allen and Kevin Henderson                     Nev Gardner and Shaun Young

Andy Sheard and Marc Goodwin                     Mark Reynolds and John Hathaway

Knowing the importance of this fixture, we fielded a very strong team even though Warren Bladon and Steve Creed were not available due to them being involved in The British Senior Amateur Championship at Ganton. Worcestershire also putting out an equally strong team got off to a quick start in the morning foursomes, winning the first two matches. The Warwickshire middle order rallied and managed to gain wins in match three and four. In match five, Marc Goodwin was making his Seniors debut. Unfortunately, Marc suffered a back injury on the course but with partner Andy Sheard, battled to gain a very hard earned half.

Morning Foursomes Result:

Warwickshire Won 2 matches, halved 1 and Lost 3.

Warwickshire 2.5 points – Worcestershire 3.5 points.

With the same pairings order for the afternoon Fourballs, Warwickshire came out fighting and managed to secure wins in matches one and two. At this stage all matches were either Warwickshire up or level. But as we all know in golf, nothing is ever certain and with all the remaining four matches going to the last hole, lady luck did not favour us. Again Sheard and Goodwin managed to halve their match which was in my opinion an incredible result bearing in mind the pain Marc clearly was suffering through out the day.

Afternoon Fourball Result:

Warwickshire Won 2 matches, halved 2 and Lost 2.                                                                                                              Warwickshire 6 points – Worcestershire 6 points.

The overall result therefore was a loss of 8.5 points to 9.5 points.

Our thanks to Harborne Golf Club for hosting us and providing outstanding food through out the day. Also to Pete Clarke who kept me calm and supported the team both morning and afternoon.

Whilst I’m sure you will appreciate this was a difficult result for The Team to accept, I must emphasise the fighting spirit The Team displayed, especially in the afternoon session nearly overturning the morning deficit and just coming up marginally short. We are most definitely a ‘Team ‘and we will re group for the ‘Sixes’ in August and our one remaining League fixture v Derbyshire on the 16th August at Mickleover.
