WLCGA Championship 2021

Yet again, the WLCGA Championship took a different format because of the pandemic. Instead of the 36 hole qualifying competition being played along with the Silver Division Medal and the Senior Championship, the event went straight into matchplay.  The 16 entrants with the lowest handicaps played in a seeded knockout over two days, Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 May.

The winners from the Wednesday morning matches played each other in the afternoon and the morning losers also played each other in the afternoon, in flight 2, so all 16 entrants had the opportunity of playing two rounds.

The semi-finals were played on Thursday morning. In flight 2 Sharon Butler from Edgbaston won over Maisie Halstead from Kenilworth on the 19th hole, and Judith Pegler from Rugby defeated Deborah Nicholls of Leamington & County by 2&1. In the Championship Liz Haycock from Bromsgrove Golf Centre defeated Katie Drew of Copt Heath by 3&1, and Zara Houghton from Copt Heath beat Lisa Barton of Coventry by 4&3.

On Thursday afternoon the flight 2 final saw Judith Pegler win over Sharon Butler by 6&4.

The battle for the Championship was a hard fought and ultimately emotional match between Liz and Zara. Zara went into an early lead, but Liz’s experience bore dividends in the end and she won by 2&1.

Congratulations to all the winners. We certainly witnessed some excellent golf and it was lovely to see four of our younger members giving the “oldies” a run for their money. My thanks to all the competitors and also to Elizabeth Earnshaw, Bobbi Waugh, Lesley Duff and referees Mary Childs and Mary Hawkins for their assistance.

Finally, thank you to Kenilworth Golf Club for making the event possible.

Veronique Lintin, County Captain
