TIM ADDS SQUIRES TROPHY AT LADBROOK

This year's Dick Squires Trophy was played at Ladbrook Park Golf Club on Wednesday 23rd October 2019. The weather was expected to stay dry and after a foggy start, which prevented the members from teeing off for an hour or so, the 29 entrants for this year's event, set off  to play a course that was playing quite long due to recent wet weather with very little run on the ball, but with excellent putting surfaces.

The main prize for the Dick Squires Trophy was played as a gross stableford competition with players receiving no handicap shots to help them. This year's winning score of 33 points, representing a three over par score of 74, was returned by current Warwickshire Seniors Champion Tim Cooley from the host club.

Playing with Tim in the same group and in second place was outgoing Warwickshire Seniors Captain Mark Reynolds from Walmley Golf Club just a point behind with 32 points. Third place was taken by Nev Gardner from Stoneleigh Deer Park with 31 points edging out both Martin Fell from Ladbrook Park and Andrew Carman from Coventry after the three players had all tied. Nev taking third place on countback over the back three holes. The nett competition would have seen Mark and Tim swap their first and second placing at the top of that leaderboard, but in order to prevent any player taking more than one prize, the nett competition then saw Tim Barnby from Coventry Golf Club again edging out Martin Fell after both had scored 34 points, by virtue of a better back nine holes score. 34 points nett scores were also returned by Laurence Greatley of Sutton Coldfield, Steve Pendleton of Kenilworth and Andy Morris from Stratford Oaks but all three were beaten on countback for the prizes.

I would like to thank Ladbrook Park Golf Club for looking after us all so royally, from the initial greeting in the Professional Shop, to Paul and his catering staff, Mandy in the Office and also Senior team stalwart Graham Taylor from Ladbrook Park, for all their contributions to facilitate such an enjoyable day. Mention also to Head Greenkeeper, Kevin Fellows and his team for the presentation of their course, which whilst playing long, offered all competitors a true and fair challenge.

My thanks also to Warwickshire Golf Union President Graham Barton for his attendance and in both playing and presenting the prizes and to my wife Deborah for all her help on the day in registering all the players before play and checking their cards after their round.

To all the players who competed my thanks to them for their participation.

Congratulations and well played again to Tim for his well deserved win and to the other prize winners.

After three years as Seniors Captain my time is now up and I would like to wish my successor Rob Soen from Walmley Golf Club all the very best moving forward with the team. Rob knows he has the full support of all the team and any help I can give he also knows he only has to ask. It has been an honour and a privilege to have served as Captain and to everyone who has played in the team over the past three seasons "Thank You" for your support and commitment to Warwickshire and my best wishes to you all in the future.

In closing my thanks again to the Warwickshire Board who have been so encouraging to me and the players and to President Graham Barton in particular for all the time he has given, and continues to give, both on and off the course, in not only supporting the Seniors team, but all the Warwickshire teams throughout the season.

Finally special thanks to my wife Deborah, who has been so tolerant and understanding and for all the support she has given to me and the players during my tenure as Captain.

Mark Reynolds
Senior Captain
