VETS CELEBRATE 65 YEARS

Friday 4th October saw the Warwickshire Vets celebrate the 65th anniversary with a luncheon at The West Midlands Golf Club.  With over 120 members present the noise level was high especially as we had been welcomed with a glass of prosecco!  Many old and indeed some new friendships were in evidence and we were set for a very enjoyable occasion.

Who would have thought that when Mrs Florence MACAULAY of Moor Hall GC had inspired a group of like minded lady golfers in 1954 to form the Warwickshire Veteran Ladies Golf Association, this group of golfers would grow and grow to the current numbers of 550 ladies, all keen to compete in both matches against other Counties and in the very popular and varied tournaments held during the summer months.  A great success indeed.

Prior to lunch our President Liz WOOLF gave a particular welcome to special guests, Anne PARRY, President and Julia BURTON, County Captain of Warwickshire Ladies County Golf Association and to the guest speaker, the well known Alison NICHOLAS.

Liz introduced Alison to the assembled company after an excellent lunch, highlighting her many golfing achievements in the world of golf:  1987 British Women's Open winner, 1997 US Women's Open winner, many tour victories on both sides of the pond together with her 6 Solheim Cup appearances and her formidable partnership with Laura Davies.  Her captaincy in 2009 and 2011 of the European Team, winning in 2011 were particularly memorable, especially in 2011 when Europe were the victors - some career.

Alison then gave an overview of her career with many insights into life on Tour both European and LPGA.  She also spoke of many interesting and famous golfers both male and female who had helped her over the years, giving away a number of anecdotes which raised the interest level.  A very interesting and thought provoking talk which was very well received.

Everyone agreed that this had been a wonderful celebration of 65 years of the Vets' Association.
