The weather was truly dreadful for the Mary Turner Bowl this year and had we been playing anywhere but Whittington Heath GC it would almost certainly not have gone ahead. But the three teams of Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Staffordshire duly turned up full of trepidation and encased in waterproofs!
Emma MORTON and Sharon BUTLER led the way off and soon all 6 Warwickshire pairs were out on the course doing battle. The course was waterlogged and some greens were puddled but somehow the competition was completed in what can only be described as persistent, torrential rain. And it was certainly worth the effort. An amazing score of 65 was posted by Kelly TOMLINSON and Veronique LINTIN who took the overall individual prize and Emma and Sharon weren’t far behind on 68 in 3rd place. These scores combined, with the remaining 4 pairings all managing to score in the 70’s, meant that we had a fantastic win by 10 shots with a combined score 433, over Staffordshire and 19 shots over Worcestershire! Katie DREW was playing in her first senior County match and went out with experienced Lisa BARTON and came in with a fabulous 72. The remaining pairs of Rachel RUSTED and another junior new to the senior ranks Holly ELLIOT, Carol O’HARE and Yen PHAM and Julia BURTON and Rahela GORDON made up the rest of the team and all posted respectable scores to help bring the trophy home.
Captain Julia commented "I can honestly say I have never been prouder of my team. Everyone stuck to the job in hand under very difficult conditions with gritty determination and good spirit. A great day for Warwickshire!"
