CLARK CLINCHES SECOND COUNTY TITLE

The Warwickshire Boys Under 14 and Under 12 championships took place at North Warwickshire on Tuesday.

Although the field was limited in size that didn’t detract from the ability and potential from the players in attendance. There is certainly some stars in the making within this group.

Making a hot start was Maxstoke Parks Callum Lee, making his way to one under par early on in the round but couldn’t quite keep his sub-par round going and made the turn at 5 over par to finish at 16 over. Nevertheless, this score was good enough by one shot, to take the top Under 12 prize and become a County Champion!

Josh Gardner from Coventry Golf Club was the player one shot back on 87, who secured the runner-up position in the Under 12 category.

Congratulations Callum and Josh!

Callum will hope to take on the Under 14’s Championship next year where as Josh as another chance for the Under 12 title next year!

For the Under 14 title, there was a particular ‘marquee’ tee time in the event where all eyes were focused featuring Oliver Clark (The Warwickshire), Sam Knowles (Walmley) and Lennon O’Neil-Knibbs (Coventry).  Lennon took the lead by birdying the first hole, but after 6 holes both Oliver and Lennon were tied on 4 over, and Sam at 7 over, meaning at this point Callum Lee was in control sitting at 2 over par.

Making their way into the back nine holes Oliver had settled the ship a little and obtained the lead after 8 holes with Callum and Lennon one shot back and Sam a further 3 shots behind.

With the pressure ever increasing all players dropped a few shots along the way, although Oliver and Sam were holding their round together a little better than the others which meant Oliver’s lead grew and after 17thholes Sam clawed his way back into 2ndspot with Callum and Lennon not far behind.

After putting out on the 18thhole Oliver Clark found himself a County Champion for the second time after winning the Under 12 Championship two years prior. Well done Oliver, and we know you will be hoping for the full sweep in the next few years!

(in fact I must check if this has ever been done before!?)

Grabbing runner-up position right at the last moment was Sam Knowles and third was Lennon O’Neil-Knibbs.

As you may have spotted 1st-3rddid indeed come from the marquee group on this occasion and watch out as Lennon has another crack at this title next year!

As well as the County titles we had a overall Nett prize which was won by a fantastic 63 (-8) from Sam Storer from Walmley!! – an unbelievable score from Sam, ensuring a hefty handicap chop from that performance, very well done Sam!

Lastly our hotly contested putting competition over 12 holes of the putting green was won with only 20 putts (on a back 6 countback) by Oliver Carmargo-Jones from Coventry Hearsall.

Well done to all our winners and good luck to Oliver who goes on to represent the County at the Midland Champion of Champions event at Kedleston Park in September.

Our thanks go to everyone at North Warwickshire for hosting the event and providing a great course to play the Championship over. We look forward to returning in 2020!
