The weather was going to be fine for the day although we started the day with some early morning Drizzle and a few showers. Stonebridge Golf Club was in great condition and we were going to be playing all 27 holes Somers/Hampton for the foursomes and Blythe/Somers for the singles, everything was set up for a tough contest and we were clear under dogs having not beaten Staffs in a league match for over 5 years.
Rhys (Handsworth) and Seb (Belfry) were out first against the Staffs top two players Zarak Curley (Capt) and Harry Fearn, playing solid golf the Warks pair were 2 up after 9, Rhys playing a great bunker shot from the right hand side of the 16th green followed by a tricky downhill put from Seb to finish the match 3 & 2 and our first point of the day.
Rocco (Coventry) & Jacob (The Warwickshire) were out second and were all square at the turn both teams playing some great golf on the back nine, the Warks pair kicked on to 2 up playing the 16th following a solid par to see out the match 3 & 2.
Next out was the new pairing of Ethan (Moor Hall) and Adam Perks (Belfry) were in a tight battle, 2 down early on against the Staffs pair and although they kept getting back in the game, frustratingly would lose the next hole and finally lost 3 & 2 again on the 16th.
Next out Charlie (Hearsall) & Sam (Wishaw) went into an early lead 3 up after 9 and in control of the match both playing very good par golf, they went on to close out the match 4&3.
Out last was our youngest pair Oliver (The Warwickshire) & Channon (Kenilworth) playing two 17 year olds , the boys were 1 down after 5 and 2 down after 9 but just could not get the match back to level with the staffs pair finally running out 3&2 winners the 16th hole was definitely the place to watch the morning foursomes.
A great morning for the boys a 3-2 lead going into the afternoon and a first session win against Staffs for 5 years.
Rhys lead the team out in the afternoon against Harry this was a match of many Birdies, Rhys was 1up at the turn, Harry would win the long 14th, before Rhys Birdied 16 to go back to 1 up, Harry birded 17 and both attempted to drive the short 18th both missed Rhys lipped out for his birdie and Harry sunk his attempt to win 1 up.
Rocco out second and steady as ever was also 1 up after 9 and in a great battle with Zarak his match also went up the last all square but this time Warks won the hole and a point for Rocco.
Jacob out third was all square with Tom Alford nearly all the way round nothing to separate them, the third match to be level standing on the 18th Tee. Two great drives followed, both hit the green in two but unusually Jacob three putted to lose 1 down.
Seb was next playing Yass Oakley the match again all square after nine, the match like the others swung from 1 up to 1 down and as did the three games before. The boys were all square standing on the 18th tee a great birdie from Yass having driven the green finished Seb off and we had lost 3 out of the first 4 matches on the 18th green and could just as easily won all four that's how tight the matches were, the match was now 4-4
Sam was out 6th and was 2 up after 9 and went on to win the 10th and finally closed out a safe 4 & 3 win.
All of the remaining matches were very close with the exception of Ethan who went out 10th to guarantee a point which he did comfortably 3 up at the turn, he would maintain his lead to win 3 & 2
Left on the Course Charlie, Channon & Oliver all 1 up after 9 and Adam 1 down, but by 14 not looking so good Oliver 1 down Channon & Charlie All square Adam 2 down the result could go either way, Charlie got back to 1 up playing 17th and made a safe par to win the hole and match 2 & 1.
Channon got back to 1 up on 16th halved 17th and held his nerve on 18th with a great drive the hole halved in par 4 and another point for Warks.
Little did we all know but Oliver had been on a charge winning 14/15/16 to go one up, he halved 17th with a par and another match was going down the 18th, on in two for Oliver it looked like another win, only for Seth from Staffs to put his wedge to 20 feet and hole out for birdie and to half the match.
Last on the course was Adam he had been behind the hole match but had dug in and gone on his own charge winning 15/16 to go 1 up with two play, he made a good par on 17th for a half and another match to go down the 18th. We then saw the best shot of the day with all the Warks players and officials around the 18th Green, Adam drove the green with his ball finishing pin high 10 foot away eagle put on. The staffs player could not make birdie and conceded Adams putt for a 2 up win and a great comeback.
Final Score 9.5 to 5.5 Warwickshire win
It was a very exciting match 7 games going to the 18th and played in great spirit by both teams who know each other very well.
