The 2019 Warwickshire Seniors Championship took place at Leamington and County Golf Club on 3rd July in glorious sunshine and fine course conditions.
Before heading out on the course players were welcomed by complimentary tea and coffee courtesy of Leamington and County Golf Club and also had a taste of what was to come on the course as the practice putting green was playing at a steady speed of 11.5 on the stimp! The greens on the course were due to be a little slower down to 11. There were numerous positive comments about the green surfaces but the feeling over all was that they may have measured the stimp when there was still dew on the ground as during the day they most definitely became little quicker.
Early scores in showed that the course was far from being a push over with the gross score of 79 being the most popular score which was matched by the same amount of no returns. The difficulty was reflected in the Competition Standard Scratch score by going up two strokes from an SSS of 72 to 74.
Only two players beat the popular score of 79, one being multiple Senior Championship winner Andrew Carman with a 76 and the other was Ladbrook Park's Tim Cooley. Tim returned a grinding score of 73 (1 over par) where he went 1 under par early on, but dropped one at the stroke index 1 (and statistically the hardest hole on the day) 6th hole. Then holding on to level par until the 12th (2nd hardest hole of the day) and 15th holes where he dropped shots but quickly bounced back with a birdie on the tough 16th (3rd hardest hole on the day) to go back to 1 over which he maintained for the rest of the round.
With this win, Tim is crowned 2019 Warwickshire Seniors Champion and goes on to compete in the National Champion of Champions event which is being held at Frilford Heath in September. In addition he qualifies for the Warwickshire Seniors Matchplay Championship, along with the other players who finished in the top 8 of this championship. The draw for this can be found HERE.
