Five counties took part in the Midland Schools Championships at the Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club on Friday 31st May
Warwickshire fielded 5 boys and three girls for the first time in many years, so there was much anticipation before the morning round began.
On a course with water in play on 14 holes, but no rain in the forecast and a brisk wind to add its own difficulty, the play got under way.
Ethan Trouth began for Warwickshire closely followed by Rhys Wallace.
Ethan came in with a creditable 79 in the morning finishing with an Eagle on the 18th. After a great drive and a fantastic 230 yard second shot he only needed a 2 foot put to finish. The afternoon round started with a painful 9 on the first hole, but a trio of birdies helped to resurrect the round for a gross 80.
Rhys Wallace bagged a couple of birdies in the morning and four birdies in the afternoon, for two 75’s.
Joseph McInnes started with an 80 . He dropped three shots on the first hole in the afternoon, so an afternoon finish of 85 was not too bad. Oli Clark found the going tough made all the harder by missing out on a practice round. He finished with 88 and 89.
Lucas Laurie, who also could not manage any preparation, did finish well in the afternoon. He followed a poor 94 with an amazing 76. What might have been!!
The girls team on Zara Houghton [Copt Heath], Grace Wilkinson [Coventry Hearsall] and Lauren Besford [Copt Heath] found the course very difficult Zara scored well in the morning for an 85 and with 93 in the afternoon. Grace sored 92 and 86 and Lauren 90 and 92.
Rhys, who finished runner up and Ethan, who finished in 10th place, qualified for the National Finals at Sherwood Forest on 24th June.
Best of luck to both boys!!
