BOYS TEAM PLAY DERBYSHIRE AT RUGBY

Our First match of the season was at Rugby Golf Club a course with 7 par threes.

The foursomes went reasonably well Rhys and Ethan securing a half against the Derbyshire top pair coming back from 2 down at the 14thwith an eagle and then birdies on 15 and 16, however they were unable to complete the comeback.

Jacob & Rocco were involved in a tight match with never more than 2 holes in it. There was some great Putting from the Derbyshire pair who secured a 2&1 win.

Next were Mitch & Luke who were behind right from the start and never got it back, a come back did look possible round the turn but the Derbyshire pair held on for a 2&1 win.

The final pairings of Charlie and Lucas and Oliver and Channon, played some great golf and both won their matches convincingly 5&4 to make sure scores were even after the morning session 2.5-2.5 .

We started the singles in good spirit with Rhys out first finding himself 2 down very quickly, but then had the match all square by the ninth. Then Derbyshire through in a combination of eagle, birdie, birdie and a couple of missed puts and an unplayable lie for Warwickshire lead to a loss for Rhys 6&5.

Ethan was also quickly down and stood 2 down on the 13thwith prospects not looking good however he managed to get it level by the 17thbut lost 18thto finish 1 down.

Rocco battled hard in his match with match level for most of the round, Rocco was 1 up after 17 and hung on for the win on 18, 1up.

Jacob battled hard but missed a few fairways and was out done from some good putting by Max Hughes to lose 4/3. Mitch unfortunately went behind very quickly and was 4 down after 8 and never got back into the match Ben Wain playing solid and safe golf finally won 5&4.

Luke did it the hard way coming back from 3 down early on to finally win 3&2, Charlie was involved in a very close match which was all square at 18 but good play by Josh Atkins resulted in a 1 down loss.

At this stage of the match we were 7.5 to 4.5 down and we needed to win the last 3 games to half the match. The last three matches were all tight. Lucas was all square playing 16th he managed to win 16 & 17 with great iron play into both greens to win 2&1. Channon had come from 1 down to be all square by 14, he won 15 &16 and halved 17 to finished 2&1. Score now 6.5 to 7.5 with the youngest player Oliver Clark left on the course he was also 1 down but played some great golf and finally getting his match level at 16. A good drive and a second shot that just went a little long to the back of the green unhelpfully ending up in some long grass making the chip more difficult. He played it well but left it 7 feet short and then lipped out resulting in the hole being halved.

Even if no one had told him the result would be decided on is match, with both teams on the course and the officials lining the 18 fairway he will have known his game mattered. He hit a fantastic drive under the pressure and Louie from Derbyshire found the bunker. Then both players missed the green with their second shot and Louie for Derbyshire found the centre of the green from 190 yards. Oliver failed get up down from a very difficult position on the right hand side of the green and he lost 1 down. He should be very proud of his performance with a win in the foursomes and to withstand the pressure in the singles confirms he will be playing for Team Warwickshire at all levels as he gets older.

Rugby demands some positional shots and accurate tee shots which didn't suit our team on the day of the match. We must learn to adapt quicker as we lost the match collectively due to the number of fairways missed and some of the boys just getting too hard on themselves, sometimes you just need to dig in and stay positive when your opponent his having a good spell.

Statistics for fairways and greens hit is definitely something every player should have and these should be fed to your coach so they know the areas that need work. It could be something small that needs looking at for all of your scores to improve.

I would like to thank all of the team at Rugby Golf Club, the Green keepers, Course manager, the Club Captain who was present at the start of both the foursomes and the singles, the Professional, bar and catering staff who were first class looking after all of our teams.

Thank you to our supporters Graham Barton, John Duncombe, John Stubbings, and Bob Harrison. A special thank you Chris Watson for his support during the day.
