FRIENDLY MATCH REPORT - U16 BOYS v SENIORS

16th March 2019

The venue for this start of season friendly between the u16s and the seniors was the Earls course at The Warwickshire. This is undoubtedly a good test of golf at any time but the stiff breeze and wet conditions would make this a difficult day for all concerned.

The format was fourball betterball played off scratch with the Seniors giving the Boys a 2 hole start. The boys team was predominantly manned by the U16s with a guest appearance from Rhys Wallace and Jacob Parsons, the Captain and Vice-Captain from the U18 team.

Watched by Bob Wallace, Richard Clark and Bob Harrison the pairs set off into the wind on the first.

Rhys and Jacob led the way for the boys with David Mason and Rob Soen representing the seniors. This game was played purely off scratch. This was a tight affair and was nip and tuck on the front nine. The senior pair birdied the 10thto take the lead before a hailstorm of biblical proportions halted play for a short while. The break helped the boys regroup and they won both 12 and 13 with a birdie from Jacob to go one up. Despite their best efforts Dave and Rob could not fight back and the match finished 2&1.

Match two saw the U16 Captain Alex Ford and Seb Cave take on Dave Calvert and Andrew Carmen. The boys extended their two hole lead early on but Dave and Andrew fought back with some good golf in the conditions including a half in 2 at the 13thwith Andrew holing a long put and Seb following him in from 10 feet. Ultimately Alex and Seb held on to win 1up in a close match.

In match three, our President, Graham Barton, and Nev Gardiner took on two of our top under 14 boys, Ollie Clark and Sam Easterbrook. Ollie and Sam got off to a flying start going 5up before Nev holed a chip on the 7thfor his birdie in front of a small crowd. The match continued to be hard fought from this point with the boys running out 3&2 winners.

The Seniors Captain Mark Reynolds and Willie Donnelly took on Lucas Laurie and Charlie Lamb in Match 4. Once again the boys took control early on going 4up but Mark and Willie were in no mood to be beaten and by the time Willie birdied the 15thafter a superb 2ndshot they were just 1 down. The last three holes were all halved enabling the boys to win 1up.

The fifth match saw Laurence Greatley and Mike Topliss from the Seniors play Joe McInnes and Charlie Seddon. Laurence and Mike soon eroded the 2 hole start and took a 2up lead. However, to their credit, Joe and Charlie did not give up and fought back with a par 4 from Charlie on the 16th, the tough long par 4 levelled the match. The boys then managed to run out winners 1up on the last.

Liam Scagell and Niall Collins who was making his debut, represented the boys in the penultimate game taking on Peter Holt and Paul Jewell. Once again despite the tough conditions the boys played some good golf to extend their lead to 4 up and they maintained this lead with 5 holes to play. Peter and Paul then launched a magnificent comeback and on the final hole Peter struck a 5 iron to just a foot to birdie the hole and half the match.

In the final match Adrian Cashmore and Paul Van Heyden for the seniors played with two more of our younger boys Sachin Kohli and Tom Poole. This was another close match with young Tom making a fine par on the 600 yard 4thhole. Coming down the last despite being 3 down at one point Adrian and Paul were all square. Sachin had played a superb approach to 10 feet on the last only to see Adrian almost hole his third shot leaving him a certain birdie. Under pressure and knowing he needed to hole his birdie putt for the half, Sachin calmly stroked the putt home. What a great way to finish the day.

So, on a difficult day the Boys ran out 6-1 winners without losing a match. A fine performance against a talented and determined Senior team with 5 of the 7 matches going to the final hole.
