Sunday 4th November saw the Mens second team play their annual friendly versus the Warwickshire Boys team.  With both squads able to field 16 players, 8 four ball matches commenced on what was a fairly cold and overcast day.

As per the tradition for this fixture, the junior pairs were given a 2-hole start.  North Warwickshire Golf club looked in great condition; we were all set for some competitive match play.  This report will quote scores including the 2up start.

The first match out saw Ryan James and Ben Goodison up against Rhys Wallace and Ethan Trouth.

Both well-established pairings this was sure to be a good game, but it was Rhys and Ethan who got the lead playing some great golf and a birdie run around the turn saw them take a 5up lead.  Ben and Ryan would fight back with two birdies of their own to get the deficit back to just three holes but Rhys and Ethan would not be denied and they closed out with a birdie to ensure a 3 & 2 win.

The second match saw Stephen Keay and Anthony Wilkes up against Jacob Parsons and Alex Ford.

This was a good match, Stephen and Anthony soon getting back on even terms after 7, only to be pegged back by some good birdies from Jacob and Alex.  Alex making a Seve like birdie on 12 from what looked an impossible position in the trees.  As holes began to run out Alex and Jacob made another birdie to close the game out 3 & 2.

The first two matches going the Warwickshire Juniors way.

The third match saw Ben Smith and Danny Launchbury up against Adam Perks and Alex Spencer.

Ben and Danny got off to a fast start and four birdies in the first seven holes saw them begin to take the upper hand.  There was no let up for Adam and Alex. In fact, Ben and Danny would be nine under better ball when closing out the match 4 & 3.

The fourth match was Karl Smith and Ash Bulpitt up against Luke Donnelly and Sam Easterbrook.

This was a close match all day.  One hole in it most of the day Luke and Sam made it to the 15thtee with their one-hole lead still intact.  A timely birdie run on 15 and 16 got Karl and Ash’s noses back in front and they would see this out to secure a 1up victory.

This drew the match back to 2 – 2.  All still to play for.

In the fifth match, Lewis Watson and Nev Gardner were up against Oliver Clarke and Channon James.

Lewis and Nev played solid golf early on to move into a lead after eight holes.  It was a lead they would never relinquish, running out 3 & 2 winners.

In match six, Rhys Lawrence and Jack Steele would be playing Charlie Lamb and Lucas Lawrie.

Rhys and Jack were in irresistible form and the birdies were coming thick and fast.  Charlie and Lucas fought tirelessly, but the birdies continued and at 9 under for the 14 holes played, saw Rhys and Jack secure a 5 & 4 win.

In match seven Chris Staite and Matt Moore would play Arnie James and Charlie Seddon.

Arnie and Charlie playing some very good golf would keep hold of their lead for a long spell and got to the 14thtee all square.  A birdie on the tough par 3 14thwould put Chris and Matt in front and they would eventually run out with a 2 & 1 victory.

In the final match Karl Mason and Rich Keegan would be up against Joe McInnes and Liam Scagell.

Karl and Rich as an unbeaten pairing continued where they left off and soon got on level terms with Joe and Liam.  With no let up from Karl and Rich around the turn they would extend their advantage and run out 4 & 3 winners.

The overall match score had therefore finished with a 6 – 2 victory to the Mens 2nds.

My congratulations to Rhys & Ethan and Jacob & Alex in securing wins of merit in the top two matches against some of the strongest opposition I could muster.  It was very good golf on the day and you are all sure to be getting calls from me in the coming season…

I have to say I was also hugely impressed with the rest of the junior team out today.  I lost count of the amount of times I was shocked to hear how young some of you guys still were.  I am sure it won’t be long until we see some of you in the mens teams.

My thanks to Bob Wallace for all his efforts in making this match happen.  Sixteen a side is a great turnout; long may it continue.  My thanks also to Graham, Bob and the boys management team for coming out to support the teams.

Lastly a thanks to my team for making yourselves available for this fixture.  No one lost 8 & 7 so everyone is safe from that record this year at least J.

Have a great winter and festive period.  Will see you all in 2019.

Chris Brown

2ndTeam Captain
