Warwickshire sent a team of six under 16 boys to Radcliffe on Trent to compete in the Midland Golf Union County Cup. The competition is a stroke play event with 5 out of the 6 scores to count and involves all ten counties affiliated to the Midland Golf Union.
The course was is good condition for this time of year and combined with the dry weather we were set for a good day. The team comprised of Adam Perks (The Belfry), Alex Ford (Robin Hood), Charlie Lamb (Coventry Hearsall), Seb Cave (The Belfry), Channon James (Kenilworth) and Oliver Clark (The Warwickshire).
Adam led the way and despite having some problems on the front nine shot a solid 78 to get us off to a good start. Alex went off second and had some problems with the bridge on the first and although he birdied the second he could not find his A game and finished with an 82. Charlie also found the going tough and despite his best efforts also shot 82. Seb was not far behind and played some good golf returning a 73 including 15 pars demonstrating how consistent his golf was.
Channon was one of the later starters and played superbly on the front nine to be level par. He finished with an excellent 74 and ended the day with the best nett score, a fine performance. Ollie found himself in the final group of the day and finished with the light closing in and the temperature dropping. Ollie fought hard all day despite not being at his best and shot a creditable 80, a good return for the youngest player in the whole field.
The day finished with the boys finishing 6th, an improvement on last year and only a few shots from 4th. It is worth noting that we had one of the youngest teams there and 5 of these boys will be able to play in this event next year.
I would like to thank the boys for their efforts and we know there are more good things to come.
