SENIORS SECURE RUNNER-UP SPOT

Warwickshire Seniors secured runners up spot in the West Midlands league with a comprehensive win against Derbyshire at Burton-on-Trent Golf Club on Friday 5th October. All match pairings contributed to the scoreline which saw the visitors win convincingly by 14 points to 4. The hosts had five members of the home club within their ranks, but it was not sufficient to prevent an initial tidal wave of points for Warwickshire during the afternoon fourballs.

On a dry day both sides set off in the hope of a win which would see either side take second spot to winners Worcestershire in the West Midlands league. This fixture will be moved to August next year to prevent the issues Warwickshire encountered by winning last year's league and Midland 6's competition. With all the league matches now scheduled to be completed by August, it will mean that any potential league winners play off match can be brought forward to September and played well away from any fixture complications involving the National Finals which will again be held in October.

The morning foursomes saw Warwickshire lead by 4 to 2, but this lead only represented one fourball match score, so it was important that the Senior Bears kept their foot on the pedal after lunch. With afternoon wins for the opening four matches the result was never really in doubt. The last two matches were shared but Warwickshire were home and hosed. Congratulations to the opening two pairings of Tony Allen and Neil Stewart and Tim Cooley and Nev Gardner who along with John Hathaway and Dave Calvert saw all three pairs win both their matches on the day.

To Burton-on-Trent Golf Club my thanks to their staff for their hospitality and presentation of their fine course which always offers a stiff challenge with many tree lined and fast running fairways and quick greens.

To Keith Brown and his Derbyshire team mates, who always provide a warm welcome and good humour, the match as always was played in a very competitive but friendly manner.

To my wife Deborah my thanks to her contribution yesterday as Rob Soen's caddy, her recent playing of the course was felt important to help Rob and his partner Dave Mason as neither of them had played at Burton before.

My special thanks must go however to the players, not just the eleven of yesterday, but to all of the other players who have represented Warwickshire during the year. It has been an honour for me to be your Captain and on behalf of the Board and myself 'Thank you'.

Warwickshire finish the year with 5 wins, 2 losses and 1 halved match from their 8 county matches played and second spot in both the Midlands Regional Finals and the West Midlands League, after winning them both in 2017.

Let's hope we can get back to top spot in both next year.

Mark Reynolds
Seniors Captain
