U14's versus Worcestershire

22 September 2018

Bromsgrove Golf Centre

This match was the rearranged fixture from the day of the World Cup final.

Safe to say the weather was not kind to us with heavy rain right from the start persisting throughout the day.

Worcestershire fielded a strong side, one which included Hugh Adams this years winner of the England Golf Reid trophy (the National Under 14 Boys Championship), with their highest handicapper at 12.  However, Warwickshire fielded one of similar standing with Seb off 4 through to our highest at 12.  So you could see from the first tee shot it was always going to be a close fought and edgy affair.

We decided as so many of the boys from both teams were making their last outing for the U14’s and will become a central part of the U16’s sides to play the match off Scratch.

In the first group a very close contest unfolded, with Worcs going 1up early on only for Warks to make it all square just a couple of holes in.  This position remained with the next dozen holes being halved until Warks got one up with one to play.  Down the 18th it went only for Hugh to make a superb birdie on the last leaving Ollie with a putt for a half to seal the victory.  Sadly on this occasion it wasn’t to be, as the ball rolled across the right edge leaving the match halved.  Overall a very fair result.

Matt White and Sam Easterbook looked like land of the giants against two much smaller Worcs boys in size but by no means in golfing stature.  Matt and Sam taking a commanding 3up lead through the turn only to see the Worcs boys put up a resounding fight and take the match to the 17th where we took a good point 2 and 1.

Finn Stokes and Sam Knowles followed against what on paper looked to be a strong pair from Worcs with both boys having considerably lower handicaps, only for Fin and Sam to play some really solid golf and saw their match home early with a 5 and 4 victory.  Great result boys!

And so to the last two matches.  All season these have proved to be close and edgy and once again Warks needed just a half for overall victory putting the pressure on Worcs requiring a win in both to see home a draw.

Lennon and Ed gave their all in a very tight match and just got pipped losing 2 and 1, leaving George and Tom to chase that all elusive half point.

Early on George and Tom had gone 4 down by the turn, they dug really deep and got the match back to all square before running just out of steam and dropping a couple of holes to see Worcs secure the win 2 and 1.  That said with a crowd of 30+ all four of the boys in the last match hit superb tee shots right in to the heart of the green on the 17th Par3.   We just couldn’t get the birdie needed to see it down the 18th.

A superb effort from the last two groups.

And so overall, a fair result. Match drawn 2½ - 2½  with a very even contest.

Thank you to the parents who stayed, walked the course in the rain, supported and cheered on every shot for both sides.

Thank you to Graham Barton, our President for his commitment to the Boys again attending to support.

And finally – please pass on a HUGE Thank you to the boys.

Regards
