WARWICKSHIRE UNDER 14's COME CLOSE AT BROUGHTON HEATH

Saturday 1st September saw a six man team of our Under 14 boys head to Broughton Heath, in Derbyshire, for the annual Midland Under 14's 10 Counties Championship.  A tournament that takes in all 10 of the Counties affiliated to the Midland Golf Union.

Riding high on the back of our recent 4 Counties victory on the same course, this team comprising of Seb Cave (Capt.), Oliver Clark, Channon James, George Halstead, Matt White and Sam Easterbrook gave us a good opportunity for further success.

Each of the teams have all six boys play with the five top aggregated scores across the 36 holes to count towards the County total, as well as both first round, second round and best overall individual scores.

On arrival, like last year, we drove into rather thick fog.  The 8.30 start delayed by 50 minutes saw our first player Channon away on the 10th, with Seb following shortly on the 1st.  Shortly after 10am all the boys were underway and in just 2 ½ hours they were all back in the clubhouse, grabbing lunch before the afternoon second round got underway.

At this half way point Warwickshire were sitting in second place, 8 shots behind a strong showing from Leicestershire & Rutland.

Our very own Seb Cave having posted the lowest first round score of 57.

So as we headed out for the afternoon, the boys knew we were not only in the mix but had it all to play for and boy they didn’t disappoint.

A sterling performance from each of the boys, followed.  With once again Seb and Channon leading the team out, Oliver and Sam followed shortly after and right through to George and finally Matt as the scores came in each of the boys had given their all and played superb.

Together we stood around the club house anxiously starring at the screen displaying the scoreboard.  We had closed the gap on Leicestershire & Rutland ….… by 4 shots sadly not quite enough, leaving them overall winners and Warwickshire as Runners Up.

Thank you to each of the boys, a brilliant day with great golf played in the games truest spirit.

Thanks also to Graham Hayes, Graham Barton and their partners for the commitment, support and constant words of encouragement both before during and after the matches.

Likewise to each of the parents without whose commitment to our County golf these successes would not be possible.
