KENILWORTH TO PLAY MAXSTOKE PARK IN LEAGUE FINAL

Thursday 16th August was the day that the Warwickshire Inter Club League Semi Finals took place, firstly Kenilworth vs Leamington & County at Olton GC and then Maxstoke vs Atherstone at Kenilworth GC. All games were played in good spirit and with another day of sunshine as the rain had passed through earlier in the day, they set off with the County President, Caroline LASSEN officiating at Olton and the County Captain Julia BURTON and then League Organiser, Jane MURPHY at Kenilworth.
Match 1 at Olton GC
Players commented that the course was in excellent condition and the greens very true. Lady Captain of Olton was there throughout the afternoon making sure that everything ran smoothly and Team Captains were Maggie SMITH, who is also Lady Captain and Margaret SHEEPY respectively.
Liz BROWN (10) was first out for Kenilworth with Debbie NICHOLS (10) for Leamington and on this occasion Debbie was the victor 3 and 2. Emma SAYWELL (11) then played against Sara BUSH (18) and on this occasion Sara was the victor 2 and 1, thus after 2 games Leamington were 2 up. The following 2 games were extremely close with Maggie SMITH (13) just beating Ali McLEAN (18) on the 19th and then Alison SEYMOUR-MEAD beating Diana PHILLIPS (19) on the 20th. Match ALL SQUARE after 4 games completed.
The next 3 games went to Kenilworth meaning that after a slowish start, they had won the match by 5 games to 2. Teresa WRIGHT (17) won her game 6 and 4 against Carolyn TALBOT (21), Brenda SPARROW (20) won 3 and 1 against Fiona SALMON (23)and then Sue DRAPER (20) won the final match aganst Val SASSELL (30).
Thus the first finalist was known, again Kenilworth who were Runners Up to Olton in the 2017 final. Well done to them.
After the match everyone had tea and scones and both Captains gave a short vote of thanks to their players and also to Olton GC for their hospitality.
Match 2 at Kenilworth GC
Again all the players thought that Kenilworth GC was in excellent condition with everyone enjoyin g the experience of playing in the Semi Final. Maxstoke managed to have a good group of supporters as the Maxstoke men had played in a match against Kenilworth earlier in the day!
The first pairings on the course all had early finishes with Maxstoke Park being the victors to quickly go 3 up. Sheila CARDWELL for Maxstoke won her game 7 and 6 against Di McCORMICK, Barbara WOOLLEY came in the victor 7 and 5 against Jo BEARD followed by Georgie KENNETT winning 7 and 5 against Ann LEGGATT. The 4th game went all the way to the 18th and they were still ALL SQUARE, but just as they were preparing to go down the 19th, Glenda LORAM, also from Maxstoke came invictorious against Noreen WIGHTMAN 3 and 1, so Marie SWINDELLS and Julie SEWELL called their game a half.
After Ella BLAKE (Maxstoke) had beaten Joyce BULLOCK by 4 and 2, the final match between Carol BANCROFT and Jo TROUVE was conceeded as by this time the team from Maxstoke Park had won the contest 5 1/2 games to 1 1/2. Well done to Maxstoke Park. So we have a repeat of the final of 2016 when Kenilworth came out on top!! Can Maxstoke Park girls reverse this in 2018?
The afternoon was hosted at Kenilworth by Vice Captain Liz CLARKE who was thanked sincerely by Jane MURPHY, League Organiser.
