BOYS VERSUS STAFFORDSHIRE

Well we seemed to find the only day in the last 3 months with rain to play this match, it was only Wergs Golf Club second time to hold a county match for Staffordshire and nearly all the players for both sides were seeing it for the first time in the foursomes.

Josh & Cameron went out first but could not get a foot hold in the game. They were 2 down at the turn with James & Ellis playing well so it was always going to be difficult to get back into the match.

Rocco & Adam going out second played some great golf but a run of Birdies from the Staffs pair saw them take control of the match early into the back nine.

Boys County Champion Jamie and Ethan gave the team some hope with a strong 5 & 4 win, could we get something out of the final two matches? Rhys & Lewis ended up facing a run of Birdies to go 4 down with 5 to play but fought back to be one down standing on the 18th tee. However they couldn't complete a great comeback. That left Jacob Parsons and young debutante Sam Easterbrook who were 4 down also with 5 to play, they managed to get it back to 2 down with 3 to play but a great shot from their Staffs opponents into 16th finished them off 3 & 2.

4-1 down at Lunch left a tall order for the afternoon... a  Ryder Cup comeback was needed in the singles.

Captain Josh & Cameron suggested loading the back Order to see if we could gain the 7 wins needed for victory, Chris & I agreed that we needed to do something different to unsettle Staffordshire.

Out First Rocco Luca (our Boys County Matchplay Champion) faced Staffs No 1 James Wilkes about to leave for USA, Rocco was 1 up playing 18 looking like a point in the bag when James holed a 25 foot putt in the side door, just what we didn't need but a great half in high quality match. Ethan out second was all square through nine when the putts started to drop for Ellis and lip-outs arrived for Ethan allowing Ellis to take control of the match and winning 5&3. Adam out third came across Harry Fearn in great form who was 5 under when the match finished I'm not sure anyone would have survived against Harry on Sunday.

Jacob Parsons started the come back and was three under par when he finished beating the very talented Zarek Curley 2 & 1 he was also under par. Out fifth one of our promising under 16's Sam Easterbrook it was a very difficult match to make your debut in and he managed to keep his game with Tom Alfred close to the turn but some impressive golf from Tom saw staffs take the point, we needed to win the last 5 games to draw the match.

Rhys Wallace beat the staffs Vice Captain Lewis Powell  3 & 2 in another game full of quality golf.  Lewis Watson also from Handsworth beat Evan Wooldridge 1 up another game with some big hitting from both sides, Cameron Bridger comfortably beat Tom Hassell 5 & 4 and our Captain (and soon to leave for America) Josh Davenport recorded a 3 & 2 win against James Lowndes.

The only one left on the course was the boys stroke play Champion Jamie Johnson a win from Jamie and we had halved a great match only problem was when Chris, Micheal  & I found him he was 4 down after 13, having given him a gentle reminder that he was a County Champion he managed to win 13, 14 &15 he was now 1 down, He was unlucky off the tee on 16th going two down again before winning 17 & 18 to half his match a great come back from 4 down with 6 to play.

The golf from both sides was exceptional all day we had won the singles 6-4 but had left ourselves too much to do after losing the foursomes 4-1 final score 8-7 to Staffordshire, a super effort from everyone in the afternoon Josh & Cameron's great plan nearly paid off.

Can I think all of the Staffordshire Team, Charlie the boys manager and all the Staffordshire officials for a great day of golf, very good company with all the games played in the right spirit.

The Wergs Golf Club, new to many of us looked after us superbly all day, the course was in good condition and set up well for some interesting match play holes, the Catering was first class and the Guinness very cold.

Finally thank you to Chris Watson, our Under 16 Manager Simon Parsons and board member John Duncombe for your help and support on day. Not forgetting the teams number one supporting parents Micheal Bridger and Debbie & Dave Easterbrook who were all out on the course supporting the singles matches.

For the parents who couldn't stay you missed some fantastic quality golf on Sunday and a great way to send Josh off to the states where we wish him great success.
