SENIOR BEARS WIN AT TRENTHAM

Warwickshire Seniors won their second match of the 2018 league campaign recording a fine away win against a very strong Staffordshire team at Trentham Golf Club. The home side, who like Warwickshire, were looking to maintain their 100% record of successful matches for this season after beating Derbyshire in their opening league match at Ingestre Park in May.

The course at Trentham Golf Club was in marvellous condition with fast running fairways and greens and the weather whilst sunny and warm for the most part saw blustery gusts throughout the late morning and afternoon. Warwickshire began well with three wins and two halves from the six morning foursome matches to lead by four points to two at lunch.

The afternoon four balls saw the opening four matches shared with two wins a piece, including the pairing of Tony Allen and Neil Stewart who returned maximum points on the day. Also unbeaten for the day was another Warwickshire pairing of John Hathaway and Mark Reynolds whose win in match five was enough for the visitors to seal victory. The final match saw a late Staffordshire recovery to grab a half after being four down well into the back nine. The overall result was a win for Warwickshire by eleven points to seven and leaves the County sitting proudly atop the West Midlands league with two wins from their opening two matches.

My thanks to Trentham Golf Club for their hospitality and the presentation of their fine course. To Robin Brennan, County Treasurer and his wife Lyn who supported the team throughout the day and to Captain Mark Ashton and his Staffordshire team my best wishes for the remainder of the season. In closing very well played to my team in delivering a win at such a difficult venue for visiting sides. It is a result that keeps us firmly in control of our destiny with regard to the League title with the team in exactly the same position as at this time last year, keenly awaiting our next league match against our friends from Worcestershire, who we play crucially at home at Leamington & County in July.

The County's next fixture when we will be looking to extend this year's unbeaten run is against Northamptonshire at Edgbaston later in the month.
