Warwickshire Golf

19 pairs competing from all over the County were in this, the first running of the Inter Club Pairs competition.  The idea behind this new event was to encourage Club members who may never have played in County competitions to have a go and hopefully realise that golf in the County is for everyone, not just the few low handicap golfers.  Each club put in a pair consisting of one silver and one bronze player.  Many of the ladies had never played in one of our competitions before and several were playing Coventry GC for the first time.

 

The autumn weather was kind to us with even the sun making an appearance but the course was playing long.  The winning scores were very close with the Runners-up from Harborne (Rahela GORDON and Ginny CLIFFORD) scoring 41 points and the Winners from Shirley GC (Carol BLACKBURN and Anne LANE) with just one more, scoring 42 points.

 

Neither Carol nor Anne had played at Coventry GC previously and Anne was new to County Competitons.  After the presentation, Anne said how pleased she was to have played in this, the first Better Ball Pairs competition and how much she had enjoyed the event,  but that she had been quite nervous at the start and was delighted to have had a partner with her!!

 

In the Harborne pairing the Bronze player had a handicap of 26 when she was picked by her club for the event and had recently been cut to 18 before the competition and with 90% had to play off 16!  41 points scored by them in these circumstances was a really good effort.

 

Many teams stayed for the results and prize presentation where prizes were awarded to first and second placings.  The atmosphere in the clubhouse was really good and everyone seemed to enjoy the format in this inaugural competition in the County.

 

Coventry Lady Captain, Claire CORDERY-CAMPBELL helped on the Registration desk, then acted as starter and finally went out with the last group to act as marker and aheartfelf thanks were given to her for her help during the day.
