SENIORS LOSE TO LADY VETERANS
The annual match between the Warwickshire Seniors and our Lady Vets saw this year's fixture played at Olton Golf Club. After a very wet morning the course was presented in first class condition and with the sun coming out all 24 players were looking forward to the encounter with relish. After the usual friendly negotiation about extra shots and the number of holes 'up' the Ladies would start with, the matches took to the course where it quickly became apparent that we had been deceived !!
The opening match was soon all over really before it started with the Lady pair of Carol O'Hair and Liz Moverley playing quite splendidly. In losing just one hole they were never troubled and some very straight driving and reliable putting gave them a comfortable win.
The second match saw Christina Kennedy from the home club and Deborah Reynolds put to the sword their male opponents Graham Barton and David Middleton. Despite a late flurry which saw the Seniors win two holes in quick succession, the Ladies quickly put paid to any comeback to win 4 and 2. Match 3 saw another win for the Ladies on the last green but with the Seniors winning both matches 4 and 5, the chance of an unlikely half was possible. However the last Ladies pairing of Pat Hawthorn and Liz Murdoch were not to be denied and their win also by 4 and 2 saw the Lady Vets seize a rare but well deserved win.
Congratulations to Lady Vets Captain Jane Colman, in her last match as Captain and all her players for their team's fine win. My thanks to my team for giving of their best but on the day we were comfortably second best.
I would also like to thank Olton Golf Club for their hospitality and warm welcome and providing us with such a very good course in excellent condition on which to play.
As to next year I am sure that everyone is already looking forward to the rejoining of battle at Leamington & County in September, although before that we do have the two small matters of trying to win the West Midlands league title on Tuesday at Stratford and England Golfs Senior County Finals at Berwick in ten days time.
