Sunday 2 July, Utoxeter. Another fine day, at least as far as weather is concerned, though, mercifully, not so stiflingly hot as our recent Boys’ match! That the match took place at all, was something of an achievement as finding ten players had been very hard work indeed, however, we began the the day with all ten present without further problems, that is until we starting playing golf!
The foursomes began well with 4 matches of the 5 showing us a small lead, but sadly this disintegrated rapidly on the back 9 and despite 2 matches going to the last hole and another 2 to 17, we contrived to lose all 5! So enough of that!
The afternoon singles were a bit more encouraging – but not much! Again, Captain for the day, Ethan Trouth at No.1 was holding his own but went from one up with a few to play, to lip out at 18 for a 1 down result. Alex Spencer, at number 2, ran into a train to go down 6&5, whilst Mitch Hopwood had a ding-dong battle to also lip out at 18 for 1 down. Next in line was Jacob Parsons, who had struggled a bit in previous matches, but this time played magnificently to record our first point of the day, 2&1 and, very encouragingly, two Under 14s, Seb Cave, who had showed his promise in an earlier match, and Alex Ford, our Under 14 Captain, both looked solid from the start and both achieved a 3&2 victory. As to the rest, let’s just say it was a bad day – we all have them! 12 -3.
The highlight from a Warwickshire point of view, was probably the horse racing at the adjacent course, where we had a close up view from the back of the 7th tee! We even had a loose horse come over to check out the golf! Clearly a Warwickshire supporter as he took a brief look over the fence then turned and went the other way in disgust!
Well done Staffordshire and thanks to them and the Club for putting on a day to match their excellent golf.
