UNDER 16's v LEICESTERSHIRE

Warwickshire Under 16s opened their 2017 with friendly match against Leicestershire and Rutland, played at Kibworth Golf Club just outside Leicester. Kibworth is a very pleasant, well laid out and well-kept course, ideal for this match. Unfortunately we were unable to match this with our best side, losing a number of key players to exam preparation. However, this did allow the opportunity to try some of our less experienced players in preparation for the forthcoming league programme.

The foursomes went well for most of the time with a new but eagerly anticipated pairing of Rocco Luca and Alex Spencer racing to a quality 6&4 victory, whilst our captain, Rhys Wallace and Theo Barnes were comfortably, if closer, taking a 4&2 win at the top. Match 3 was also going well at 3 up and match 4 was comfortably taken by Ollie Smith and our newest recruit and youngest player, Seb Cave by 4&2. Match 5 was having a rough time and went down by 6&5 so 4 – 1 looked safe as we went to check, but, somehow, pair 4 had managed to turn 3 up into a 2 down loss, but still, 3&2 is not bad for an experimental team.

Then, the singles – all looked well at the ninth, with only two matches being more than one down and the match more or less even. What happened over the last nine?  Perhaps the first match resulted in lack of mental stamina? Who knows? Captain Rhys did his bit, beating a player of known quality, Owen Tweed, 4&2 and Mitch Hopwood suddenly taking command to win 5&4. Oliie Smith and Charlie Seddon were always up against it and lost comfortably.  As to the rest, they seemed to find the last few holes a problem as all either lost narrow leads or failed to close narrow arrears to lose closely fought matches. Alex Spencer just failed to salvage a half from dormie 2, when after a brilliant birdie at 17 he very narrowly failed to win 18 despite finding a ditch on the way, his opponent ‘up-and-downing’ for the necessary half. Youngster, Seb Cave also acquitted himself well and with great maturity, but could not quite hold on. We shall hear more of this young man. Effort there was, results there were not and 5 – 10 resulted.

Thanks to Leicestershire and Kibworth for a good day- the later afternoon horrible weather cannot be blamed on them!
