On Friday 29th July Stratford Oaks hosted the Warwickshire Boys (under 18's) and Under 16's Championships which is a stroke play event played over 36 holes.
The course was set up perfectly and enjoyed by all. The weather also was relatively kind and although it threatened for most of the day it thankfully stayed dry.
The morning round was some what dominated by a fantastic bogey free round of 5 under par from The Warwickshires George Gill, with his next rivals being Josh Davenport (Maxtsoke Park) and Ryan James (Nuneaton) both with steady level par 71's. Then 2015 under 16's Champion Dan Pearce (Maxstoke Park) along with Tom Cleaton (The Warwickshire) not far behind on 72.
In the Under 16 age group, Josh Davenport held a lead of 3 shots after 18 holes from Moor Halls Omid Mobed and one further back sat Joshua Kearns from Copt Heath. Anything could happen during the afternoon round and all still to play for.
The players that trailed our morning leaders certainly didn't "take their foot off the gas" as some great and improved scoring from most of the top 10 kept the pressure to deliver a score right on top of George.
Tom Charely followed up his morning 76 with a 69 (-2) posting a 3 over total, Dan Pearce shot a steady level par 71 for a 1 over total. Unfortunately Ryan James couldn't quite follow up his morning round form and returned a 76 to add to his 71.
Joshua Davenport returned a fantastic 68 and low round of the afternoon which left him on a 3 under par total which in most years would be very likely to take both titles but this year was good enough to win the Under 16's Championship a huge 10 shots! - well done Josh
Meanwhile the quality of Georges golf never wavered and continued into the afternoon round which helped him to return a 1 under par 70 and a total of 6 under par to grasp the Boys Championship title by 3 shots from Josh. A fantastic score George and we wish you all the very best as you move forward into the National Junior Champion of Championes event at Woodhall Spa in September.
Both of our champions also qualify into the Midland Junior Champion of Champions being held at Shifnal Golf Club also in September.
Running along side the individual event was also a team event where a Club selects a team of 3 players and their 36 hole totals are added together to provide a winner. By reading the above you can possibly guess that the Warwickshire had 2 very strong results but to add to those was a great score by 15 year old Jacob Parsons which was enough to give The Warwickshire the title, closely followed 3 shots further back by Stratford on Avon Golf Club.
We must give our great thanks to Nigel Powell and all the staff at Stratford Oaks for hosting the event, providing a challenging and fair golf course and to Club Captain Nico Pretorious for assisting in the prize presentation.
A huge thank you also to all of our volunteers in helping to manage this event and ensure it ran so smoothly.
