Warkwickshire Girls V Northamptonshire Girls
Sunday May 15th 2016 at Henley Golf Club
Warwickshire Girls played their first league game of the season against Northamptonshire on Sunday 15th of May. The first group of matches were all played off scratch and the girls made a tremendous effort to keep their matches going for as long as possible facing opposition with much lower handicaps.
Well done to Lauren Beaman - Moor Hall, Grace Wilkinson - Coventry Hearsall, Ellie Leech - Robin Hood, Amelia Machin - Kenilworth, Jessica McGhee - Rugby and Jodie Wood - Shirley. Although the result of the scratch matches was 6-0 to Northampton the effort put in by the Warwickshire girls was fantastic. They are a credit to their County.
The girls playing in the 3 handicap matches were three newcomers to Warwickshire League games. They were Megan Gee from Maxstoke, Ruby Kitchingman from The Warwickshire and Victoria Beard from Shirley. The result was 2-1 to Warkwickshire with both Megan and Victoria securing victories. Megan finished 5 and 4 with Victoria’s result 4 and 3.
To conclude the matches for the day three Warwickshire girls were due to play matches to gain experience. All three girls were called up at the 11th hour as many of the usual Warkwickshire squad were revising for important exams.
First up was Maisie Halstead from Kenilworth. At the age of 8 and playing off a handicap of 44 Maisie secured her first county win in a tightly fought match finishing 2 up with 1 to play. Lauren Gavin from Coventry Finham was due to play in the final match but having arrived and donned her kit was unable to make it to the first tee due to illness. As a result Phoebe Machin played her match alongside two Northamptonshire players. Phoebe secured a half in this game. Well done to both of them - talent indeed for the future.
The final result was 8 1/2 to 3 1/2 to Northamptonshire.
I would like to thank all the girls for making themselves available to play in this game along with all the parents who made sure they were there in plenty of time and to Ellie Leech, Junior Captain for her support prior to the match.
My final thanks go to Henley’s Lady Captain, Linda White, Vice Captain, Margaret Taylor and Past Captain, Diane Elsgood for escorting the girls who had less experience of match play around the course. Henley-in-Arden Golf club made us all very welcome.
Jane Brennan, Junior Organiser
