County Match Week June 2023

County Match Week

We arrived at Sonning Golf Club in Berkshire for the Practice round on Sunday 18th June. All my team played well and we were all excited for the week ahead.

Liz Haycock, Katie Drew, Arianna Virik, Hannah Coles,
Zara Houghton, Lilly Phelps, Maisie Halstead
Rachel Rusted, Skye Furnace, Alison Nicholas

Zara and Lilly had returned back from America where they are currently attending a golf college. Katie our Warwickshire County Champion was making her first appearance at the County Match Week (CMW). Vice Captain Rachel, Hannah, Liz and juniors Arianna and Maisie made up my eight players. There was a welcome dinner in the evening where each County introduced their teams.

Our first match on Monday was against our neighbours Hereford/Worcestershire. The weather was glorious and the course was in superb condition. Zara managed a half but sadly we lost 41/2-1/2. The team felt a little disappointed so a win in the afternoon was important to raise moral. The afternoon match was against Berkshire.  Katie and Maisie won their first foursomes match and Hannah and Liz each won their singles matches. A win 3/2. Just what we needed.

On Tuesday we woke up to thunder and lightning and the forecast did not look good.  We arrived at Sonning GC to be told play had been suspended. Luckily the storm passed quickly, the greens were swished and play was back on. Our match was against Buckinghamshire who have won this competition for the last 12 years. Arianna and Maisie won their foursomes match but sadly we lost 4-1. This result did not reflect the superb golf that was played by my team. The afternoon match was against Oxfordshire. Superb golf was played by both teams. We lost both our foursomes matches, but I didn’t need to worry as Liz, Arianna and Hannah all won their singles matches. A win 3/2!

On Wednesday the last day, our match was against Northamptonshire. I told the team if we win this match we would come third and if we lost we would be fourth. Rachel and Hannah won their foursomes match to give us a great start. Arianna and Liz won their singles matches. This win confirmed our third place in the tournament.

I would like to thank Pat Hale and Bobbi Waugh for coming to caddy over the two days and providing their support to the Warwickshire team. The team were most grateful for their encouragement.

I would like to thank the legend Alison Nicholas who gave me such great support and advice throughout CMW.

Most of all I would like to thank my team who played superb golf and made my last CMW a truly memorable experience. To come third is such an achievement and I am very proud of you all.

Good luck to Rachel next year.
