Moor Hall are England's Champion Club
Moor Hall Golf Club has won the prestigious England Golf Champion Club event at Lilley Brook Golf Club in Gloucestershire held last weekend 17th and 18th September 2022. The competition which sees three players each play 18 holes of scratch golf over two days with all scores to count on each hole saw Warwickshire's Champion Club compete in the event for the second successive year. The team which was made up of brothers Rob and Dan Bardsley and John Paul Banbury shot a three under par total of 411 to win by six shots over Gloucestershire's representative club Henbury with Northumberland club Hexham a distant third some nine shots further back. Moor Hall were behind Henbury by one shot after the Saturday round and the team knew that every shot could be decisive on the morrow and so it proved... unfortunately for Henbury. After eleven holes of play on Sunday the teams were level. The 12th hole at Lilley Brook is an uphill par four at just over four hundred yards that dog legs severely to the right. Moor Hall had a bogey five from Rob but crucially two pars from Dan and John Paul. Henbury had a bogey, double bogey and triple bogey from their players on the same hole. Moor Hall's hole score was thirteen and Henbury's was eighteen. Two holes later on the par four fifteenth hole, Moor Hall had a par from John Paul but both Bardsley brothers made birdie, for a total of ten shots, Henbury recorded bogeys from each player, their total was fifteen shots. These two holes proved decisive and Moor Hall was effectively over the line. They could even afford a two shot swing against them on the last hole.
Their individual scores of Dan with 69 & 69, Rob 68 & 69 and John Paul 70 & 66, were extremely consistent and as the English Champion Club sees them compete as England's representative at the European Men's Trophy being held at the Troia Golf Club in Portugal next month.
