Warwickshire Boys teammates Ryan Gavin and Joshua Gardner played yesterday in the Midland Golf Union 2022 Midland Boys Junior Champion of Champions Final at Burghley Park Golf Club in Lincolnshire. Situated just outside the town of Stamford and adjacent to the Burghley Park estate, Burghley Park Golf Club, where former Ryder Cup Captain Mark James first started playing golf, was presented in very fine order. The course, founded in 1890 whilst not long at just over 6300 yards and with a par of 70, boasts three or four drivable par fours but just two par fives both well over five hundred yards in length and four par threes all of which are under two hundred yards long. The holes dog leg to both left and right and large trees block out the players from a view of the green if they are not on the correct side of the fairway.

Ryan, the County Boy's Champion and Joshua, the County Boy's Under 14's Champion were paired together in the same threesome along with Oliver Toyer from Cambridgeshire. This event which is split into age categories saw twenty four boys competing from across the Midlands' ten counties to arrive at an overall Champion irrespective of age. Philipp Krone from Moseley Golf Club and representing Worcestershire won the overall Championship with a course record score of 64 in the morning and a level par round of 70 in the afternoon. His five shot victory over Taylor Coleman from Derbyshire and Lennon Albans from Nottinghamshire who both tied second, saw Ryan finish some three shots further back in fourth place alone after rounds of 74 and 68. Joshua finished in seventh place with rounds of 70 and 77.

Whilst the overall result was identical for the Under 18's championship, in the age categories at under 16 level, Ryan rose to second place again behind Philipp Krone and Joshua climbed to fifth. Ryan's excellent second round of 68 was the best score of the afternoon despite two bogeys on his last two holes.

In the under 14's championship Joshua's opening round of 70 gave him a handy lead at lunchtime and when just one player bettered his afternoon score albeit by just one shot, Joshua was victorious by some six shots over Jadon Pham from Northamptonshire.

In summary, a great performance by the two Coventry boys and it was a delight to be there to watch them take another important step along the learning curve towards making them even better golfers than they already are.
