Seniors Midland 6 Qualifier at Birstall GC 11th August 2022
Another fantastic performance by Warwickshire Seniors in winning the Seniors Midland 6 Qualifier and now go on to represent the Midlands in the English County Finals to be played at Rothley Park GC in October.
EG Seniors County Championships (Midland Qualifying)
Birstall GC 10th and 11th August 2022
The Seniors took a strong team to The Regional EG Senior County Championships at Birstall,
representing Warwickshire were;
Warren Bladon, Tony Allen, Tim Cooley, Ken Spencer, Shaun Young, Steve
Creed and Dave Mason.
As you can imagine, conditions over both days of competition were testing with
temperatures soaring above 30 degrees. The emphasis for our players and caddies was to
keep hydrated and maintain focus which I can proudly announce that they did on both
counts.
On the first day, Team Warwickshire was led off by Steve Creed who delivered a stunning
round of 71. Tony Allen had a series of bad bounces that resulted in a 79. First time ‘Sixes
player’ Shaun Young rose to the occasion and put Warwickshire into an early strong position
by matching Steve Creeds’ earlier score of 71. Middle and backend of the team order then
consolidated our position with solid 75’s from the ever steady Ken Spencer and Tim Cooley.
The day was capped off with Warren shooting a 72 giving Warwickshire a 10 shot lead over
our local rivals Worcestershire.
Day two followed a similar pattern to day one with Steve Creed posting a 72. A battling Tony
Allen improved his day one score by 2 shots giving us a good start. However, Shropshire and
Herefordshire had started to charge through the field and whilst we were still ahead, the
margin had been reduced. Shaun suffered a couple of real bad breaks and ended up with 79.
Up stood Ken and Tim to deliver scores of 76 and 74 respectfully that restored our lead
which we had at the start of the day. It was left to Warren to close out the victory which he
duly did holing out from 10 foot on the last to rapturous applause from the crowd that had
gathered around the final green.
Our victory margin was 15 strokes from Shropshire and Herefordshire.
Congratulations to Steve Creed who tied for the best individual score which was 143.
It was noticeable and commented on by opposing Counties that Warwickshire have an
enviable support structure, and I truly believe that this made an incredible difference in
terms of player performance.
Our caddies, Mark Williams, Pete Clarke, Michael (Arthur) Robbins and Martin Fell did an
unbelievable job for the players in the extreme heat. Our team of ball spotters, Nev
Gardner, Mark and Deb Reynolds and our super sub Dave Mason who was like Wayne
(Radar) Riley striding the fairways. Many Thanks to Bob and Bridget Harrison, Graham and
Lyn Barton, Malcolm Eustace and John Duncombe for taking the time to come and give their
personal support to The Team.
So to The Finals, these are being held this year at Rothley Park, Leicestershire from the 4th to the 6th October 2022. The preparation has already begun!!!!
