Rugby pair win Trophy Final
Brian Coomber and Gareth Williams from Rugby Golf Club have won the 2021 County Membership Scheme Trophy Final with a 2 and 1 victory over their opponent's from Coventry Golf Club, Matt Moore and John Davenport. In yesterday's Final played at North Warwickshire Golf Club the men from Rugby used their handicap shots to prevail in a closely fought contest that up to the 13th hole had seen only a one hole lead for either pair. With Matt, playing off a scratch handicap and giving his partner John just 3 handicap shots, but crucially their opponents Brian and Gareth some 25 and 17 shots respectively, it was necessary for the Coventry pair to make birdies in some cases just to halve the hole. Surprisingly after seven holes no hole had actually been halved, Matt had made birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes to bring the match back to even after losing the opening two holes. John's par three on the 5th hole put the Coventry pair ahead for the first time but a three putt par from Matt on the par five 6th hole, saw the match again back to level. A winning par at the short par four 7th hole, saw Matt and John lead again and as the next four holes were halved they stood on the 12th tee with a one hole lead. Nett pars for the men from Rugby, however, either side of a nett birdie from Gareth on the 13th hole saw, them win three holes in a row to take a 2up lead and with the next three holes being halved, Brian and Gareth emerged victorious after they both made nett pars on the 17th hole to seal the win.
The match had been played in excellent spirit and congratulations to both Brian and Gareth on their victory and commiserations to Matt and John for their efforts on the day.
My thanks to David Hartley, Honorary Secretary at North Warwickshire Golf Club for allowing us to play the Final at short notice and the membership of the Club for their warm welcome. The course was firm and bouncy, like most courses at the moment, but the greens were in excellent condition and my compliments to the greenstaff for the presentation of the course.
