Girls County Championship at Kenilworth on 16 July 2022

The Warwickshire Girls Championship was played at Kenilworth Golf Club on Saturday 16 July.

Having had the 2nd round last year cancelled due to heavy rain, the girls played this year in the hottest of conditions! With constant reminders to drink lots of water, to wear sun screen and hats, 6 out of the 10 girls playing were undeterred and completed 36 holes.

We were delighted to hold the Championship at Kenilworth Golf Club and were very grateful to Lady Captain Jane Adams and Vice-Captain Bev Coleman for helping us on the day, along with Alistair Scott who acted as referee and our wonderful President Bobbi Waugh and Skye Furnace, Warwickshire Captain.

The course had been beautifully prepared for the girls and there was some excellent scoring particularly from Maisie Halstead with gross rounds of 79 and 77. In the afternoon, Arianna Virik, despite carrying a foot injury, fought back with a 78 gross to add to her 84 morning round.

Along with winning the best 36 hole Gross Trophy, Maisie also won the Best 36 hole Net Trophy and under 16 Gross Trophy over 18 holes.

Arianna was runner-up in the 36 hole Gross event and also won the best Gross Trophy in the under 14 Category.

Both Maisie and Arianna are members at Kenilworth Golf Club and the club must be very proud of their achievements!

But they were not the only ones to walk away with a few trophies! Sophie Goonewardane–Brown, aged 11 at the time and with a net score of 68, 5 under par, won the best Net under 18 Trophy for those playing 18 holes, the best Net under 16 Trophy and the best net under 14 Trophy! A fantastic achievement!

Heather Gilks, fresh from England Disability Golf Association tournaments in Europe and Ireland won the Best Gross under 18 Trophy for those playing 18 holes.

Maisie will go on to represent Warwickshire at the England Golf Girls County Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa in September.

Maisie has also qualified in the under 16 category for the Midland Union Champion of Champions at Burghley Park in September  together with Arianna in the under 14 category and Molly Moffat in the under 18 category. All three girls have entered and we are delighted to have such a strong Warwickshire representation.

In addition, Maisie with her gross score and Sophie Goonewardane-Brown with her net score have had their scores submitted to the Justin Rose/Telegraph Tournament.
